Amnesia is open but only a small area by the front door. When I rode by earlier in the week it was closed and it seemed the whole place was being gutted for remodeling. So for now it seems that cannabis is being sold but no place to sit down except the 2 outdoor tables.

Both Rick's Cafe and Rick's Coffeeshop next door are open. They were just closed for a few weeks, most likely for holiday.

It doesnt really matter how you justify it to yourself, it is a rule in some shops and you must obbey the rules for the place to serve you. They are private businesses and are more than entitled to ask you to leave if you refuse to take off your hat. I don't really get all the fuss. Its a dress cod...

I thought the ban had been put-off for a year for coffeeshops? Not true. It's kinda is true.... but it wasn't just for coffeeshops and that year is up in July. The smoking ban for bars, coffeeshops, restaurants and clubs has always been scheduled to take place July 1, 2008 so it has not been put-off.

It is not the individual coffeeshops that make you take your hat off. All coffeeshops in Amsterdam have to close no later than 1AM every night of the week for over a year now.
