Checked in luggage is xrayed (now days all checked in luggage is xrayed) and can be passed over by a sniffer dog, so no it isnt any safer. Besides you have both checked in luggage and carry on luggage on you when you run the guantlet through customs. Posting it to your home address is the safest way...
