That's a good idea hulldj and definitely worth considering if need to use my cell phone in other countries. At the time though, it was just simpler and cheaper to pop into the T-mobile/Oranje store and buy a sim for ~€10, since I was already in AMS. Popped in the sim and I was good to go, eazy peazy.
