Bulldog Hotel & Hostel-Ed the Head's 2 cents worth

Post by ed the head »

I've stayed at the Bulldog 3x and am going back there February. I like it, they have clean dorms of 8-12 people at about E30 per nite. That's about the cheapest I've found, it's CLEAN and well managed. The staff is super and friendly(mostly), just be mindful of all the menstrual cycles present as there are lots of women on staff. Don't get me wrong, they're all cool, but a cycle is a cycle and the poor dears sometimes LOSE it, but I digress.

It's very centrally located (RLD, Oudezijds Voorburgwal 220) and anything you may desire is very near at hand, easy walks. There's a sroomery and a coffeeshop right next door open early and late. I score most of my consumables elsewhere, but it's good to have them handy now and then for supplementation :D The lobby and bar are super smoker friendly, but are restricted to guests, staff and people the staff let in 8) . I think this is essentially a PRO because you have a semi restricted 'haven' from which to operate your Dam adventures. There is no smoking in the rooms, but there's a large roof terrace in addition to the aforementioned lobby/bar. I have read some negative reviews, but most avoidable with a better approach. You get what you give here so bring a good attitude. I travel alone, but if there are a number in your party, they have rooms for 2-6 people. There's 1 room right off the terrace for 4 or 6 people that is awesome.

Best of luck wherever you stay

This post is pretty old now, 5+ years.

My trips have continued and my stays at the Bulldog have gotten even more enjoyable.

Consistently good and improving over the long term, A+

Can't wait to get back to my Amster-home away from home ... 3 .... more .... days¡!!¡

It's pretty nice at bulldog, i'll grant you that, but pricey.
The breakfast is really nothing special and for near 90 euros for
the night ( room ) a stay for the cup period can be quite a bit.
On the plus side i would say is the bar downstairs, it's open
all the time :)
When all the shops close down ( around 1 AM), you just take your friends to
the Bar/lounge and keep on smokin'.
Really came in handy for the cup last year, i just asked the
security if i can bring in some friends and he said no prob.
So Matty,Phil, twocanucks and me smoked to at least 2:30 or
3:00 AM.
That was pretty cool.
When i stayed for the cup last year they messed up the reservation
and i had to stay in a 16 bed mixed dorm for 2 days, wasn't so pleased about that...
Got to say that i was surprised how quiet everybody was in there, you could
just about hear a needle drop,no kiddin', bulldog gave me the difference
for the room, and all was good.
I can only say if you have the money for the bulldog go for it.
Got lucky and got a room for 55 euros at voyagers this year :)

I've stayed here in all but 1 Dam trip over many years (well several stays at least) and never a problem. Had both a private and dorm in this place. Never had a problem in a dorm in the slightest. Except that the bar staff often forget that the beers are supposed to be half price between 8-9pm on a number of visits. But saying that the staff in reception and bar are very friendly. All in all a decent service and quality to cost ratio here.

But this trip, next month I'm trying somehing different and staying at Zeeburg camping site in a tent.

Thanks for the feedback. I am in agreement. Personally, I have always stayed in the dorms, so it's not so expensive, around 30E per night. Breakfast is definitely not worth 90E! Especially since I will only make it to breakfast a couple of times in the week ;)
Also agree about the lounge, open to 3 or 4 usually. Supposed to be for guests only but thank God Security does a good job of funneling in beautiful people.

My biggest problem with the dorm this time were 3 guys tripping on shrooms in my room Friday night, apparently farting up a storm. Literally drove me out the room gasping. 3 hours later, everything back to 'normal'

Also, some dude from Italy 'borrowed' my anti perspirent, but I just borrowed it back.

Easy problems.

I guess that is the 2 person room? The rate I was referring to was the mass dorm. At 30E the breakfast is more palatable, but I get your point.

Hmm, we'll guess we have to inquire of the quote source, Trashcanman.

I know Matty, but have only met up with him at Voyagers once (I think?!) a few years ago.

If we ever happen to be in town together, I will most likely be staying at the Bulldog. If you're curious to check out their hotel bar, stop by. I have observed that they often encourage guests to bring in friends.

It's a good bar, and more often than not is teeming with a cool, mostly younh-ish stoner crowd by closing time. It's pretty 'chill' in the early afternoon and early evening, and crescendos into a denser party atmosphere toward closing time. Midweek can have exceptions to the late night frenzy.

I also enjoy the Bulldog - I've had nothing but great experiences in their hotel - the private rooms are ok if not a little bit odd - great deep baths and spotlessly clean.

The apartments are fantastic (they have much classier decor these days) and the staff couldn't be better - they're all super friendly, helpful and totally stoner friendly too of course. The bar open till 4am is the icing on the cake and the lobby normally has smokers in it 24 hours so it's great for night owls like me :)

Oh! Too be young :D I hate when I take wrong turn and have to walk past the place. The idea of staying there would not even enter my mind or what little I have left :x
