I've restored chat for now. It still has an issue that I'm trying to fix but it sort of works and the data is intact.

If you want new messages to appear at the bottom rather than the top you can change it in User Control Panel.

1. Go into User Control Panel (click your name, top right).
2. Click on the mChat tab.
3. Change the setting "Location of new chat messages:"

It's all working properly now. Behind the scenes the global config is now fixed. This means that you don't need to change the settings as described above, although you are still welcome to customise it according to your own preferences.
