Hey, wait a quick one...
... I'm on my second hydro and second clone (first from scratch)
... that's why I'm now a poor hydro farmer with dirt experience instead of just a poor dirt farmer

Not an expert, but I'm sticking to a few simple rules and they do the trick.
Follow these and you won't have to learn on your own skin.

-Don't tell anyone
-Take care of smells
-Don't overwater/overfeed
-Keep everything clean if you can, mold is a tiny little bitch
-Plants NEED light
-Try to keep temperature/ph stable
-Don't harvest too soon or too late
-Look at your plants to understand if something is going wrong
-Make a big harvest party

I have mentored many people through entire grows. I grow using the KISS philosophy.

Remember the plants do 99% of the work as long as your environment is dialled in.

A good grower can look at their plants and know what they want or don't want.

I would advise to start growing in organic soil as you only need to add water, also pot up at least 3 times so you get a nice dense rootball, more roots = more shoots.

Use the heft method for judging when to water, pick the pot up and if its light then its time to water, soil plants like to go through a wet/dry cycle. Then water slowly until you get a little run off out the bottom of the pot. Now pick the pot up and it will be nice and heavy and don't water until its light again.

Growing in coco is my preferred method, it combines the ease of soil growing with the increased growth rate and yield of hydro. Well technically it is hydro as the nutrients are in the water although Potassium will build up throughout the cycle. Coco has a high cation exchange capacity which means the coco can hold onto the nutrients and the plant can uptake them as needed, in comparison perlite has zero CEC.

I grow in 3.5 litre pots of coco and water with a dripper/timer system, 3.5 litre pot may seem small but its better to have lots of short roots as opposed to less long roots as only the tip of the root can uptake nutes. My timer comes on 6 times per day for 2 minutes and once the pump turns off the pots will be 100% saturated and then when the coco is at 50% saturation the pump comes on again. This gives my plants 6 wet/dry cycles per day and the advantage of this is the amount of nutrients the plant can process is directly proportional to the amount of oxygen the roots uptake.

I've yielded up to 100 grams per plant with this method although the plants must be supported well as they get very top heavy. Small pots make flushing during the final stages easier as theres less substrate for salts to build up.

Any questions throw us a pm. :)

also:
-ventilate very well and watch temps (get a min/max thermo)
-make sure the air inside circulates, all plants should wiggle slightly all the time due to wind (once they're past early seedling stage)

Hey Treetop, it's been two months, were you able to find any growing mentors?
If so, how has their advice worked for you? If not, don't let it stop you (no doubt it won't, stated for effect). :)
There is vast amounts of information available in the internet, and libraries as well. There are several excellent websites that may provide information that you seek. A couple that you might already be familiar with, but nonetheless... http://www.rollitup.org/ http://www.icmag.com/
Good luck and happy farming...

ps... it's all about the RH%...

BUG PROGLEM!

Any ideas anyone? In a northern-mid-west-basement, and about 77F light on .....67F light off.....35% humidity on average....18/6 cycle....seems to happen when lights go off....sprayed with product called elementals, and no changes....fyi not my grow/decision, just trying to help a friend....suggested to him 24h light on since it cant hurt, and since he claims its happening in dark, then remove dark.
