Because of the 250m ban?
Best move they could do, imo.

No, it's because of the "requalification" of Wallen district (RLD).

Green House Effect right across the road is owned by the same people and has the exact same gear. All it will mean is that you buy your gear across the road and walk 2 meters to Hill Street Blues.

This is 100% correct! The menu at both Hill Street Blues and Greenhouse Effect are the same. I think that part of the decision to change Hill Street Blues to a smoker-friendly alcohol-serving bar is the fact that the Greenhouse Effect Bar has had such great success with this format. Hill Street Blues has a much bigger space and can accommodate more smokers/drinkers.

The new law banning tobacco smoking inside any building unless it's inside an enclosed smokers' area has definitely changed things in Amsterdam. Bars with enclosed smoking areas find those areas filled with patrons while the non-smoking areas remain practically empty. Of course you have to push your way past a couple of dozen people smoking cigarettes standing on the sidewalk in front of most any establishment just to get inside to order a drink.

The changes on Warmoesstraat have been pretty extensive since my first walk down the street back in 1998. The campaign to "clean-up" the Red Light District has made quite an impact. I have always considered Warmoesstraat to be the "entrance" to the RLD and now it's become a PG-rated, Family-Friendly, pedestrian mall where tourists can brush-up against the RLD without getting "dirty". I noticed that many of the more lurid sex clubs have disappeared along with the more "seedy" shops and hostels. Now, a lot of sleek new eateries and renovated hotels have filled those spaces.

The sex shops that remain seem to have filled their windows with the least offensive and most clinical displays possible. I noticed that the large and bawdy sign over Chickita's Sex Paradÿs was no longer there and the main window display was colorful and filled with a variety of sex toys. Regardless of the merchandise, it looked like a typical window display at any mall shop.

So, the new Hill Street Blues seems to be a reaction to the new environment that Warmoesstraat has become as a result of the changes that have been brought about by a variety of factors being pushed by the Dutch government.

What's next? Only time will tell!

Shame I used to really like this shop it was my first CS way back when, but the vibe has gone, I used to spend hours in hsb get in nice an early claim a massive bean bag by the open window
Watching the world go by on the damrak.
But now there's this glass wall thing, keeping the rear a smoking area,
So it's no surprise its changing to a bar,
peace to all who walk through greener fields

Can someone explain this to me? I understand the CS ban regarding distances from schools etc.
But what is the 're-classification' of the RLD? And the 15% rule?

Also,
Do you think the closure or the reverting to smoke friendly bars inevitably means the remaining shops are becoming far busier? Is this having an effect on supply and quality?
