How to clean a bong (properly)

Post by Felty »

My mates just spent quite a bit on a beautiful Roor glass bong.

After about 5hits the bowl turned very dark. The bong itself is also starting to get dirty.

I've heard that lemon water and vinegar is good? I don't have a bong myself, if it was me I'd just use warm soapy water. Bit of fairy liquid or something.

But he doesn't have an account and cba to make one so I said I'd ask on here.

He's got some 'bong cleaner' off the tinternet but not used it yet

Any help?

To get it as clean as new: boil up some water in a cooking pot, add some dish washer powder to the boiling water, fill up the bong from the top with the boiling mixture, it's possible to use one of these big bong brushes if neccessary. After the bong is clean, use some warm tap water to make sure there aint not chemicals left on the glass. This method is for glass only.

Just add iso and table salt. Shake vigorously until spotless. A bottle brush could be usefull too.

The best way to get any glass bong clean and in new condition is to use isopropyl alcohol and dry rice grains. First, block off the small stem so that no fluid can leak out. Disposable paper towel works well. Next, pour a good amount of the alcohol into the bong along with the rice. Hold the bong firmly by covering the top opening with your hand and holding the bottom end securely. Shake for a few minutes and you will see that this will cut through the brown tar instantly and better than any other method and your glass will be sparkling clean!

Although I am unable to confirm nor deny my source, I've been advised to clean my glass in the following manner... a real pain in the ass...:)
Materials (adjust as necessary for size of glass):
- 200mL/6 fl. oz. Iso (adjust to size)
- 1 tablespoon sea salt (adjust to size; I suppose any salt will do)
- 1 liter/1 quart of boiling water
Directions:
- mix alcohol and salt; pour into bong/water pipe/etc...
- cover all openings and shake vigorously until glass is free of residue, maybe 15-60 seconds...
- pour out the alcohol/salt/residue mixture and dispose...
- prepare glass device by quickly rinsing (5 seconds) in hot tap water...
- submerge glass device in boiling water for 30 seconds, remove, cool...

...a real pain in the ass.
Zippy suggests when the glass is dirty, throw it away and buy a new one.
 thinks Zippy is using the wrong type of drugs...

Where is Colina? I figured he would have weighed in by now...

Iso isn't cheap, 200ml is way too much. 50-75ml max for all but the largest of bongs. I would also suggest not to dispose of residue iso mix straight away. It can be used to clean a couple more bongs, ash catchers and or used to soak bowls, stems and glass gauzes in before cleaning them up.

Isopropyl is not the easiest to find either. Most chemists in the uk don't stock the 99% stuff, which is what you need but a few will order it for you. It's around £20 for a gallon. Clockwork Pharmacy in London is where I get mine. They have branches on Caledonian Rd and on Mare St Narrow Way in Hackney.

LOL NO to the boiling water.... you do realize it heats up the glass a lot and can damage (i.e. break the bong).

just take some hot water from the sink.... rinse the bong. (hot water acts to increase the effectiveness of the alcohol.

pour a bunch of kosher salt in it. (table salt is too fine)

then a bunch of 99% alcohol (important to get the strong one, its usually 70% which sucks).... and shake a bit.

should clean it all out.

I use 70% iso, and always gotten everything clean. I don't think the 99% stuff is needed when you're just cleaning.
