Are the Dutch really that rude as I have read?
so I am coming to The Dam in septmeber and was surfing around a couple sites about coffeeshop reviews.. and I must say I read ALOT of reviews about RUDE coffeeshop owners and staff! whats the deal????
im sure tourists are not coming to the shops and pissing them off and being rude , from the reviews it seems the Dutch are a total bunch of arrogant pricks! it truely makes Holland really ugly if this is the case..
anyway of course the positive out numbered the negative..
but my question is..
how rude are the dutch? and do they really hate tourists?
whats the inside scoop from you guys..

Re: Are the Dutch really that rude as I have read?
Hey coffeeman, welcome to the forum!
Generally in coffeeshops I found out the saying "the customer is always right" certainly doesn't apply here, after all the customers are lucky to have a place with a license to sell weed, so as mentioned if you remember you are a guest in another country and have respect for that, you generally get what you give in attitude.
Most Dutch people (the ones I met anyway) are confident speaking and get to the point without beating round the bush - it may seem a slight change in culture but I certainly didn't see this as being rude on any of my visits.
In fact I now realise how rude people in the UK are after seeing the manners in Holland!

well to admit
most of the people in am*dam are nice and don't bash up tourists
i haven't met so much rude coffeeshop dealers
only in zutphen (coffeeshop the zoo) the owner of that shop was a little bit rude to me and was agressively asking for my ID
but that is so far the only time i met a rude dealer
(and when i am in the dam i sometimes are just a britsh punk with accent who is screaming to everyone who crosses the bicycling path
)

I also can say that Amsterdamers are still ok, but I can't say that for the rest of Netherlands because I had some not very nice experiences with rude natives around Noordwijk, Rotterdam, and around Utrecht (at moments I felt like in a hostile savage village somewhere in Texas...) and I really don't feel welcome there (also at many campsites the first (& last) sentence they said was "youngsters not allowed"), so what to say, in future I will go to Amstedam only...
I can recommend a great campsite in Amsterdam (ofen very crowded) with nearby tram station (tram 14 to the Dam square), the price for 2 persons, tent and car was 17 euros. Very fiendly and helpful staff. No old serious tourists, only young smokers

From my point of view I haven't come across a single dutch person who is rude, they may be a little blunt and honest with what they say but not rude.
To Weed is a Deed - Amsterdam isn't the only city/town in The Netherlands that sells weed and why should they be nice? Its us that should be grateful to them for being so open and liberal!

I think some of this apparent rudeness of the Dutch is only perceived by Americans and is related to cultural differences.
The way that, for instance, food is ordered in a US diner would sound like a demand rather than a request in the Netherlands (or UK for that matter) and comes across as very rude. This can lead to an abrupt response.
“Hey, I’ll take a gram of White Widow” may not seem rude but try waiting until asked what you’d like and saying, “Can I have a gram of White Widow please?” for a much better reaction.

very nice and helpful people
I thought that all the Dutch people in Amsterdam and Haarlem (the two places I visited) were sooo nice! Everyone seemed so happy there --- people were smiling everywhere I went. What a great place! I felt very welcomed by the Dutch when I was there. People were very helpful and made me feel at home in the city. I can’t wait to go back!
However, like any place, I think there must be some rude or insensitive people somewhere in the country (although very few because I did not come across any.)

I find the dutch to be friendly and happy folks. I usually get a warm greeting where ever I go. As for dutch women, I love them all.
Now, a couple of times I had issues with budtenders that were apparently in business for themselves as I was ripped-off. I would not be surprised if they were ripping off their boss also. on the plus side, I'd expect that during my next visit that these budtenders will get fired or quit and all will be right again.

My thoughts are free.
