things to do ?

Post by zootdog »

hello. apart from obviously sampling the finest and only the finest shops and strains. does anyone have anything they can recomend to get up to during the day apart from the obvious tourist stuff?

im going with my woman in april, its out second time going together, and last time we both got kind of zombiefied and pretty much just walked from shop to shop, then got food, then shop to shop etc etc. which was very fun however this time we would like to get the maximum out of our 3 day 2 night stay, whilst stoned or smoking a biggen.

preferably things that would be free or cheap

there is quite possibly already a thread for this sort of thing, if so, im terribley sorry

Visit vondelpark, museumpleins on a nice sunny April day . Both are nice place to have picnic or relax .
Have Late walk in RLD (after 11pm) to see all the crazies cum out and the nice ladies in the windows .
Visit the markets flower/waterpkeins/Albert cuyp and others.
If you got 10euro take the train to zandvoort and 1/2 stop in Harlem have a walk in both towns zanvoort is by the sea ,you got few things you can do ,walk in the duines, walk by the North Sea visit the racing track ( I think on Monday they have races NASCAR euro )< you may view from the duines but you'll have to be an early bird , by showing up by 7am before the NASCAR people block that off from people who want to see for free. 8)

Go to a covered or outdoor market. Lots of markets of every kind operating within a 15min tram ride radius.

I like Albert Cuyp straat market and Waterlooplein flea market. There are others quite big I think.

it's well worth taking the time to explore the area to the east of central station.. the library where you can have lunch on the top floor and see the lovely view from the terrace, Nemo, you can walk for free up to the top and chill for a while and the beautiful scheepvaartmuseum is worth a look too

Try a free lunchtime concert at the Concertgebouw. They're usually only 1/2 an hour and are frequently incredible if you approach them with an open mind (cs gear will help facilitate that!). Walk back across the Museumplein, and you can have a wonderful afternoon at Vondelpark, which is to the left of the Rijksmuseum if you're coming from the Concertgebouw. Then walk towards the city center and head left through the Western Canals. The walk itself is worth it. I've found several small art galleries and studios in this area. There's usually some avante-garde stuff which you can chat about with the artist, who will usually offer you a free glass of wine or champagne as you discuss art and life. Just walk yourself silly and keep an eye out for all those little shops; you never know what you will find when you turn the corner. Even if you're staying in a hotel without a refrigerator, stop in one of the cheese or specialty food shops (or markets, as has been suggested) and pick up a little sample to munch on during your walk. There are some decent late night music venues you can enjoy without spending much. I like the jazz at the Cafe Alto, near the Leidseplein. Just buy a beer; I think they used to charge a cover on weekends, but they didn't the last few times I was there. If you want to really explore, read some of the travelogues, which include interesting excursions outside the Dam...and if you're into colorful graffiti, there's a good thread on that ("Other Amsterdam" section, I believe). You might find it interesting given your state of inebriation.

I know what you mean re: all we did was go from one cs to another. I went on a trip with a couple friends and all we did was smoke for a week, nonstop. Although I was ripped out of my mind, which was great, it was easily the most boring of my 7 trips. The Dam is a fascinating city. Walk or bike around and you'll discover some great things "by accident." For example, I didn't even know Amsterdam had a little Chinatown until I smoked a bit at Basjoe's (or was it Greenplace...or Hill Street Blues at the Market) and walked though the East side. Also, just try to politely engage in conversation with both the locals as well as the tourists who come from all corners of the globe. It's not often you can have a mellow conversation with such a diverse cross-section of people in a relaxed setting.

Ah, here's the graffiti thread: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=18854
