Here we go again then, it's the traditional 4/20 thread!

Thursday 20th April 2017 is Four-Twenty Day!

As usual, I've been beaten to it and there's been a 420 2017 thread running since September 2016!

There are also quite a few members already listed on FlyByNite's Who's in Town.

If you've read any of my previous 420 thread introductory posts then you'll be aware that they're all largely the same. They do get longer every year though and it's is all part of the tradition. So ...

Why 4-20?

The origins of 4-20 are the stuff of legends and discussed elsewhere on this forum.
Suffice to say it's a time, 4:20, as in twenty past four, now firmly associated with marijuana, especially in America.
In American shorthand, the 20th of April (20/04/17 in Europe) is 04/20/17, so it's 4-20 Day!

(Wikipedia: 420, 4:20 or 4/20 (pronounced four-twenty) refers to consumption of cannabis and, by extension, a way to identify oneself with cannabis subculture.
The notable day is April 20.)

History of the 4-20 Gathering

2005
Soon after the ACD sprouted a forum in March 2005, Old Hippie Dave posted details of meets he'd arranged around 20th April 2005.
It seems that he and others on the Channels forum had been celebrating 420 day in Amsterdam for a few years.
After the event he posted this: Old Hippie Dave's video of 4/20 2005.

2006
In 2006 AzLaker helped to organise a band of ACDers to join the Channelites in de Kuil coffeeshop (420 cafe) on 20 April 2006.
The following day Old Hippie Dave held a "Vapo Party" in Amnesia.

2007
2007 was a big gathering with several forums represented. There's loads of pics in circulation of some of those epic sessions.

2008
Planning for the 2008 gathering was, at least as far as this forum was concerned, interrupted by it being off-air for months.
Fortunately Channels was still there and, especially, VDF stepped in and kept everyone in touch.

2009
By far our biggest gathering yet. We pretty much took over the 420 coffeeshop for half an hour or so.
Live reports were posted in Travelogues by AzLaker, Cattales1960, Couch, Fishinbob, Hestia, Lemming, WolfDangler and Worsall.
Followed by reports from Boner, Chilly1952, Couch, FenixNYC, Gapie, Hestia’s epic account days 1-8, days 9 & 10, day 11, day 12, day 13, day 14 (20th April) and day 15, Kermit, Lampshade, Lemming, LiquidSwords, PirateRaff, SoulRider and Twichaldinho.

2010
Some Icelandic volcano with an utterly unpronounceable name blew up and grounded all air traffic in Europe just before 4-20.
Nevertheless, a hard core of ACD members hit town in style.

Some members from the USA arrived just before the volcano went off and some determined people from the UK managed to get there by road, rail and ferry.
They were joined by Amsterdam resident members and, between them, they even managed to bring about the first ever ACD competition for best coffeeshop.

All of the members of the forum chose a shortlist of coffeeshops for our intrepid reporters to check out and give a rating to.
All of those members who made it then toured the shops and chose a winner.
We named our accolade the "Hestia" (well, if the American academy of movies can call theirs "Oscar" then why not?).

2011
Of banners and boats, cups and cakes. Volcanoes went off all over Amsterdam but, fortunately, not in Iceland.

Very Lem! Things we need to figure out ,cup,T and T what format they take .Where to be at 420 ,is Utopia open before six now? If we do camera shot or boat trip ,road trip ,bike trip With Nugs the list 17 ,I know bunch of lurkers out there are planning on coming , nice. I ordered 25 badges taking Ingi and a few others in to account I should have enough ,but if we get a rush of posting I can order more so post up We have time , put some thought into these things Roll on 420

To continue the discussions started by Macky -

Bases

Voyagers/Batavia is a reliable combination for many purposes. I'll probably propose evening sessions in the Bat Cave (downstairs at Batavia) on my first and last nights. Voyagers is a good place to meet for train excursions to Haarlem, Utrecht or whatever else comes up (personally I'd like to check out some other places such as The Hague).

Utopia is a perennial favourite, at least with me. The latest I've heard, though, is that it's still closed until 6pm on school days.

I don't know whether it makes any difference but the Easter bank holiday falls the weekend before 4/20 this year so I wonder whether the whole week might be a school holiday in the Netherlands?

So long as it's open at any time then I think it makes a good base because of Ingi and her crew. It performs the role that the Nes used to do in being a great place for first timers to catch up with us. Ingi and co recognise many of us and can point us out to newcomers.

4:20 on 4/20

Again this is dependent on how things settle down regarding opening hours. Ideally I'd like to get back to the traditional 420 Cafe (de Kuil). Last year we tried the new 420 Coffeeshop (the former Dutch Flowers) but that's rather small.

Boat

I'll get in touch with the captain. Hopefully we can do the same as the past couple of years.

Cup

I'll defer to you on that one, Macky (although we could just give it to Utopia and be done with it ).

Ribs

I'll happily put a meet at de Klos on the itinerary but, as a vegetarian, I won't be joining you!

Interesting Lem,hear you on cup maybe give them nine lives award or dodged a bullet cup Onehighmofo brought cup last year.
The elite cup is that week maybe if we can buy enters from CS it would make cool crawl one afternoon.
On 420 I like how we set T and T couple hours apart a couple years back.This gives people time to get over whitey or eat .Gives time for small groups break off for a while and then catch back up. I prefer to crawl
Trip to the hague will have takers Lem.
The only event I,m holding ,like last year a little birthday bash Last year a group of us had fun at Barneys uptown.
Something about Barney rubble ,Tree Top and a vaporizer…things got little blurry governor
This year moving to Bat Cave,some like being able to have a Dab a Doo time. So 18th eight o,clock Batavia Mackys bash come out have some beers .I will already have been in town a few days ,so should have lots of smokables

Thanks Lem, I'm glad to be coming over for a bit of a 420ish, well a good ACD gathering anyway. I think 2013 was my last one, with my daughter.
I'm surprised theres no info on Roots CS, being so near the concert halls. Me and Smirks (for it is he with whom I am going to see the Great Troubador) will correct that. I've not seen Bob Dylan before, funny that we should both get to 70 for it to happen, hope we're both still standing come April. He's on the 16th, 17th and 18th so your Mrs wouldn't make it. still tickets going, around the £100 mark.
