''KNSM Java Eiland Amsterdam is an artificial peninsula which lies in the eastern dock area of Amsterdam. Until the 1980s the area was in use as a harbor. Lots of new buildings were erected instead. The former harbor has been urbanized. From 1902 the area has been exploited by KNSM - the Royal Dutch Steamship Company. Passenger and cargo ships sailed to and from this island. Until the 1960s the Steamship Company did well, after which it had to downscale its activities. The curtain fell for KNSM in 1977. After the company left, the island became a wasteland. Squatters and city nomads took over. After a number of years the city council decided to build new homes in the area. It is now a much sought-after residential area with striking architecture. If you like modern architecture, you should visit this island.''

Things to do in Friesland on Oudjaarsdag.
1. Carbidekannon Schieten New Years eve and New years day.
'Every year, youths in Friesland mostly, get together to shoot of 'carbide milkcans' (melkbusse). The bangs they produce cost a lot less than imported fireworks. And it's a lot more fun, too - because it's not entirely legal in a lot of places...'

Big 'bertha' 3500 litres . .

First of two excellent timelapse HD videos.
'Streams of people in Dam Square' by ettabrute@flickr.
''I wanted to experiment with rendering moving people into actual 'streams' or 'flows', so I decided to go to Dam Square, very much the tourist center of Amsterdam. A very lively plaza filled with tourists, performers, trams, cars - a big mess of everything. I went into the 2nd floor of a department store and held my camera against the window, with a ND3.0 filter attached. It's interesting to observe how people flow and swarm in a square/plaza that has no material differentiation for path vs node (sorry for the spatial jargon). At one point a street performer calls out, and a group of people start aggregating, which in turn attracts more people. Kind of a wonderfully informal, constantly self-redefining space.''
