Post by closetstoner »

hi guys i need info on a few things..

1. a grocery store close to Barney's Lounge

2. best way to get to Katsu from Barney's Lounge (walk it? cycle it?)

3. bookstores (preferably used/2nd hand bookstore) in amsterdam

4. free wi-fi hotspots (are they common?) - i am an iphone user, so any additional tips will be helpful e.g. costs

1. if you're going to the coffeeshop or restaurant on haarlemmerstraat, there is an Albert Hein supermarket one block west on the same side as the restaurant.

4. Dolphins, Homegrown Fantasy, Little Shop have free wi-fi. we found a couple of hotspots outside Barney's Coffeeshop... there were also a couple feed connects around Mellow Yellow.

Iko,
I don't recall seeing any Starbucks, but we are Tim Hortons drinkers and weren't keeping an eye out.

Although, we found just about any "conventional" coffee shop had pretty good coffee, some had wi-fi for free, but cannot recall any names off hand.

But...

Get the tram

Out of barneys Lounge and do a left, and then do a right over the canal, soon you should come to some tram tracks (its on the road that goes down to Mellow Yellow) get the 16, 24 or 25 tram, and get off @ Albert Cuypstraat, take a walk down the market and do your 1st right, over the 1st crossroads and Katsu should be on your right looking very colourful :-)

thanks for all the info.

TC: (un)fortunately i'm not living around there, i think that particular barney's is called or used to be called barney's breakfast lounge ... which is also next to some kind of barney's farm if i'm not mistaken. i am looking forward to basjoe's from reading your log 8)

liquid: ta for the tram info. i have never been to katsu and i'm ashamed. i'm not sure if want to tram it this around, thinking of renting out a bicycle. but then again i have not checked the weather forecast so my plans might just change. tram does sound good right now because i'm in a lazy mood :-P

so guys if anyone has info on supermarkets around the areas of barney's lounge or the rembrandt plein throw some this way please.

The closest AH is through the bloemenmarkt on Leidsestraat, next is Vijselstraat, next is across the bridge to Waterlooplein (Jodenbreestraat) and there's a couple of small shops and a bakery on Utrechtstraat.

Forgot the one on Regulierbreestraat...doh!.

Thanks for the info TC , i am going to bring an itouch instead of a laptop since the trip is only 8 days , loaded up some maps and gps , may prove useful if i can find the wifi spots.
Hope your enjoying the long weekend :D .

Thanks for the kind words, and enjoy your adventure... oh boy are you gonna love it! You are correct about the breakfast/farm, we didn't get a chance to pop into the Lounge, and that will have to be corrected our next trip.

Enjoy... you are lucky! You're heading from Vansterdam to Amsterdam and back to Vansterdam... not a bad situation... (except for travel time I guess) envious of all that fine herb you'll be smokin!

We didn't have an iphone or itouch, so the Mrs navigated 95% of the time by map... we've got this worn out map now with about 40 shops written all over it. Gonna laminate it and save it for memories.

Gotta love the looooooong weekends, all the best back at ya!

That's a very good idea. The toilets on them aircraft are hellishly small, hardly enough room for a proper sit-down job.
