Its illegal to smoke in the streets, I think the police turn a blind eye if you're in a park (just make sure theres no kids about), I think you can be fined as well if caught smoking in public.

in other cities there might be problems through smoking in public, but amsterdam will be ok. we smoked everywhere and anytime even with police passing behind us and they did not even look. as long as you dont cause trouble, litter or molest people you will be fine.

i've seen people been told not to skin up on the street by the police but they were pretty nice about it.

my view is that i am a guest in the someone else's country and it is my responsibility to behave as a guest

i smoke outside in parks but not where there are children or people who are not not happy with the smoke

vondelpark is an excellent place to enjoy a sunny day, there are many areas where the smokers chill, just avoid the children's wading pool area

It is impolite to smoke marijuana on the street in general. Those who selfishly choose to light up anywhere and everywhere are really not helping to preserve the coffee shop scene here. Just reinforcing the image of unwanted 'drug tourists'.

In a quiet spot in the park, in a coffee shop or in your own home - fine. Just ambling down a regular street - nope, not cool.

Just two days ago I watched police asking groups sitting in the Nieuwmarkt not to smoke joints or drink beer. Good manners are respected the world over.

Nope, he is a CS manager, less people smoking outside a CS is better for him. Means more money coz we all know no matter how much bud you buy you still have to buy drinks. Myself i can only drink so much but i smoke constantly, i dont live there so have no home to toke in. The parks are an option but we all know the weather is not the best always so thats also not possible.
I have never been told to put my biff out or stop skinning up outside during many trips, i am polite and well manered always. As for politness of Dutch residents well you dont hold back in our country when you come to the EXPO do you? No! beleive me you just spark up in NO SMOKING ARENAS. without a second thought.
Maybe CS need to put a room in for people who want to smoke there large bud purchases but not drink. I DONT THINK so.
OUT OF SIGHT OUT OF MIND is the best way for me and i will continue to do so.

You are of course welcome to your own opinion. I was simply giving an insight from the point of view of an Amsterdam resident as well as that of a coffee shop manager.

Consumption of something is compulsory. Be it drink or smoke. Of course you can buy 5 grammes here and smoke it without a drink (though I would suspect your mouth would end up a little dry). That is your choice. I cannot speak for other shops.

I am also unable to comment on this 'expo' I'm afraid as i really dont know what you are referring to.

seriously, thats what makes it amsterdam for me kind of. my dutch relatives see it about the same way. to them smoking at home or a coffeeshop is normal, but in amsterdam you just smoke wherever you want to. when I was there last weekend it seemed like 75% of the people (and I dont mean just tourists) was tokin in and on the streets.
