First Trip to AMS
First Trip to AMS
Hello everyone. I'll be in Amsterdam October 1-4 and again on the 8th (I figured I would check out London for a few days). I'm traveling alone and all I know is what I have learned from this Website. If anyone is going to be there when I am, I would like to meet up and have someone to smoke with. Also, which Coffeeshop is closest to the Hilton?
Hi. Welcome to the community!
You've never been in ams before. Know the city is quite small.
Closest to your hotel is Tootsie, which isn't well known. Some other small ones are in the area, all spread out. I recommend you to go to the area between the Ceintuurbaan and Heineken Experience (stadhouderskade). There are about twenty (!) in this area. It's only about half a mile from your hotel Check out KATSU, it's one of the better ones in this area
FYI, the hilton isnt in the center of the city

Hilton, etc.
Thanks a bunch for the info and tips. I have booked/ paid for the Hilton for 10-1-09 thru 10-4-09, so I'm stuck there on those dates. Walking a mile or two is not a problem for me. I was thinking of going to London Oct. 4 - 7th, but the more that I read about AMS, the more I think I will just stay in town for the week of the 1st thru the 8th. If I do stay, what hotel would you recommend for Oct 4 - 7?
Thanks again,
-Jess

You have been posted on the October Whos In Town page.
If you decide to stay in Amsterdam for the 5th, 6th, and 7th, let me know and I'll post you for those days too.
You can see who else may be in town during your stay.
By default I link your posting to your profile page here on ACD.

I can change it to a web link ( myspace, facebook, personal page )
or an email address if you want.
First timers get my S G Collins recommendation
I think a read of this will maximize your efficiency once you get there.
How not to get hit by a bike and other stuff they forgot to tell you about Amsterdam.
Print and carry an ACD coffeeshop map.

How not to get hit by a bike
this document may be found in the excellent S G Collins website recommended by FlyByNite for first-time visitors to amsterdam
imho reading this document is the very most important preparation you can do to ensure your own safety in amsterdam traffic, because being hit by a bicycle could ruin your day ...
if you have already read the document, then thanks, but if not, then please please please read before you arrive, and thanks
have a great trip ...
