Cheapest way to get to and stay in Amsterdam

Post by steven »

Hi folks,

Just gonna waffle on here but hope some stoners may be able to give advice.

I am planning on returning to Amsterdam in October with the missus and have looked the airline prices. I know I can travel with BMI Baby flying from Manchester around 5pm and returning 3 days later at 10am. This costs approx £96, I can get a direct train from Carlisle to the Airport for £59 return, so in theory it would cost £155 for travel. If this choice was taking it would mean 3 nights stay and that's where it fires up the costs. If I opt to leave 1 day earlier I would only have 2 nights stay but not arrive untill the evening of the 1st night then leave 1st thing on my 3rd day, so I would only have 1 full day, this makes you think is the cost worth it.

Other Alternative is with Easyjet from Liverpool leaving on a Tues at 7.15am arriving in the dam for 9am, then returning from the dam on the Thursday evening at 10pm, again this costs less than £100 for the both of us. This seems the better choice as we will still have 3 full days andonly need to pay for 2 nights bringing it to approx £200. The biggest problem is that I am unable to get to Liverpool for that time unless I drive and with the cost of parking, petrol and an overnight stay brings it up to the £300 mark. To Take the train would mean staying the night before and the night once I return knocking another £100+ on to the price.

I can also sail with DFDS from Newcastle for approx £168 but the money and time you spend on the ferry is crazy and I vowed never to do that again, as this was my method when I last went over in April. You could easil spend £150 all round on meals and drinks.

So I am now becoming frustrated in finding the best solution where I would be able to save a few £'s to spend on smoke.

I have trailed all the common sites for rooms/hotels. ACD included but I find them all to expensive and the cheaper ones look like shitholes.

So now I have waffled can anyone give advice on the best and cheapest way to get there from Scotland and give reviews on cheaper places the Kooyk (think that's it) being one of them. £200 to get there and back including getting to the airport is what I am looking for plus 2 nights stay.

Thanks in advance.

To be honest I think that you have all the options there already. But out of interest which is your nearest airport and can't you get a mate to drive you?

As to Hotels, on average your looking at around £100 a night. As to cheaper hotels have a look in the hotels forum, there are plenty of cheap options reviewed in there and then check it out on tripadvisor because although it might look a shithole (and there are many shitholes in the Dam) it might be a great budget hotel.

Hiya thanks for the reply, Edinburgh (but really bad flights) is the closest airport or Glasgow but Glasgow are setting us back £350ish and Edinburgh with easyjet are way over £250. Crazy as it seems it is cheaper to fly from Edinburgh to Belfast then fly back over the UK from Belfast to the dam all for £202. But again shit flights which don't land untill evening

If that is for 2 adults and not each and runs during the week 20th October, please post the link as I can't see anything that price.
Thanks

I think i'll probably opt for the Manchester flights with BMI at £46.98 each return, plus there is no extra charge for credit charge booking just now.

At least we could get the train direct to the airport, stress free.

I am able to make any date, it's just that the missus is off with the schools here in Scotland and goes back to work on Mon 26th.. I could leave her here and go alone but she's having none of it.

I know I said I would never do the ferry again, but just looking at it I can sail from newcastle on the Mon 19th and arrive in dam 9.30am on Tues 20th, then leave again on the wed 21st at 17.00hrs getting back on the Thursday, if I book the buffet all you can eat this will only cost £202.
So that will give me all day Tues and half of Wed, with 1 overnight stay.

However I am still thinking of the Manchester flight, but will also get on the link boner put up.

Cheers  I will find a way
