Drug-free Cannabis Plant Comes Closer To Reality

Scientists have come closer to engineering drug-free cannabis plant after identifying genes that produce psychoactive substance in marijuana.

University of Minnesota researchers have identified genes producing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive substance in marijuana, which could lead to
new and better drugs for pain, nausea and other conditions.

The study showed that the genes are active in tiny hairs covering the flowers of Cannabis plants.

In marijuana, the hairs accumulate high amounts of THC, whereas in hemp the hairs have little. Hemp and marijuana are difficult to distinguish apart from differences in THC.

With the genes identified, finding a way to silence them-and thus produce a drug-free plant - comes a step closer to reality, say researchers.

Another desirable step is to make drug-free plants visually recognizable.

Since the hairs can be seen with a magnifying glass, this could be accomplished by engineering a hairless Cannabis plant.

The researchers are currently using the methods of the latest study to identify genes that lead to hair growth in hopes of silencing them.

“We are beginning to understand which genes control hair growth in other plants, and the resources created in our study will allow us to look for similar genes in Cannabis sativa,”
said David Marks, a professor of plant biology in the College of Biological Sciences.

“Cannabis genetics can contribute to better agriculture, medicine, and drug enforcement,” said George Weiblen, an associate professor of plant biology and a co-author of the study.

The finding is published in the Journal of Experimental Botany. (ANI)

The powers that be, cant control cannabis consumption so they are going to take the THC out of it, genetically. This is just WRONG! Simple minded men think they can improve on Mother Nature. How stupid can some people be!?  I feel sad for this world. :(

What's the point of THC-less weed? What will they think of next?!

the only reason I can think of is that they want to separate industrial Hemp from cannabis, and by removing the hairs and THC, they can create a visual distinction between the two.... which could lead to an increase in Hemp production....

If there's a distinct visual difference between the two, we wouldn't have the problem like before when the dutch police killed off the University's crop of industrial hemp......

thats the only reasoning I can think of.... other than decaf weed.....and thats just retarded...

the conspiracy theorist inside of me says they might be trying to eradicate cannabis, this is from a study on the damage GM corn from the US has done to the native mexican breeds, even though its illegal to plant in mexico:
if a farmer with a one-hectare plot plants a single row with GM seed, 65% of the plot will be GM in only seven years.

the conspiracy theroist inside of me agrees  GM plants are some scary shit. The only flaw with that plan is since a lot of herb is grown inside in a controled enviorment the spread of the Gm pot would not effect these grows. But there is a real chance that gm foods and plants can screw the worlds food supply and up the enivorment even more.

they might use a different method to combat indoor grows, like banning the production of HPS bulbs, that sounds far fetched but the EU have already banned the production/importation of standard house lightbulbs.

I think its an EU directive...its the same here in Ireland,no more being made and none imported...all to helpthe environment...no mention of the fact that the CFL bulbs are ful of Mercury...no proper recycling initiatives...just wait til that lot leeches into the soil and rivers...
