We just got back from Europe less than two weeks ago, but we're already looking to plan our next vacation. In the past we always did 7 to 10 day Caribbean cruises, but now that we've been to Europe, that seems a little boring (We've taken 9 cruises of a week or longer together over the past 5 years). We were going to take another cruise that wouldn't involve flying, but more than once she has said we could go to Amsterdam for the week and I'm about to take her up on the offer. While she enjoyed our first trip to Amsterdam a few weeks ago (we spent 3 1/2 days there in early September) she doesn't really smoke and I worry that she will be bored at the end of a week or more there since we're looking to go for 9 days.
The time she can get off of work is from around the middle of Feb. to the middle of March. Whichever week we pick, we'd plan on arriving on Friday morning and leaving on Sunday afternoon. Are there any events that time of year that we should try to be there for?
Is there enough stuff to do over a week to keep her occupied while still allowing plenty of time in the coffeeshops? We saw the Anne Frank house last time and walked through the Vondelpark as well as wandering all over the city, but we didn't do anything else touristy.
What cities are within a reasonable distance by train and worth going to? I wouldn't mind spending 4 or 5 hours on a train each way and detouring for a day or two for something interesting, even to a different country.

Why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly?
There is no need to spend a lot of time in coffeeshops. Do a buy and fly. Toke whenever the opportunity presents itself.
Artis is a nice attraction. With a good possibility of one of those toking opportunities coming up.
A hit with the ladies are the many Markets in town.
For a day trip, Haarlem or Utrecht are both places I enjoy. For the last several trips I have been staying in Haarlem. Utrecht is a college town.
A nice over nighter ( or long day trip if you are young and healthy ) is Arnhem. There is a WWII museum there. The big attraction is Hogue Velue.
No matter where you go in the Netherlands you can find your closest coffeeshop on this MAP.
The ACD map is printable. If you haven't done so yet, print six or seven copies and take them with you. Toward the end of your trip, if you have any left, give them away to folks in need.
Here are a few of my things to do in Amsterdam bookmarks.
If I haven't already bookmarked the English page they mostly have an English button or a British flag you can click.
