Anne Frank channel launched on YouTube

The channel features existing and new images, including the only known video footage of the Jewish teenager who died in World War II.

The Hague -- A channel was launched on YouTube on Wednesday for Jewish teenager Anne Frank who died in a World War II Nazi concentration camp, the video sharing site and the Anne Frank House announced.

The site contains existing and new images, including the only known video footage of Anne: a seconds-long shot of her leaning out of an upstairs window during the wedding of a neighbour in July 1941.

It also includes an interview with her father, Otto Frank, a preview of the new virtual museum of the Anne Frank House, and a series of interviews with people who knew the girl, said a media statement.

"With the Anne Frank Channel on YouTube, people around the world will be able to explore the life and significance of Anne Frank through unique images," said a media statement.

"We hope this YouTube channel will help broaden the reach of the Anne Frank House, its educational power and its message of tolerance."

The site contains a clip of South African anti-apartheid activist and Nobel peace prize laureate, former president Nelson Mandela, talking about the strength he had derived from Anne's diary during his own imprisonment.

Anne, her father Otto, mother Edith, sister Margot and four other Jews hid from Nazi occupiers for nearly two years in an empty section of the Franks' Amsterdam home.

The teenager chronicled the details of her life until the group was betrayed and arrested in August 1944. Anne died in 1945 in the Bergen-Belsen camp in northern Germany.

The first printed edition of Anne Frank's Diary came out in Dutch in 1947.

The best-seller has since been translated into more than 70 languages.

The statement said a virtual, online museum will be launched on April 28 next year as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Anne Frank House museum.

They didn't hide in their house. The Anne Frank House on Prinsengracht 263 was the location of the business that Anne's father owned.

I tend to agree, it's heavy going in places, but had to read the other side of it all.

As for Anne Frank, I've been to Amsterdam loads of times and not being Jewish or have anything to do with Jews or their ways, I've never felt inclined to visit the house or any time in the future, guessing what it consists of and not being flippant, it's not for me. However, I am off to visit Auschwitz and Birkenau death camps next year which I will find interesting to see along with the city of Krakow too. (anyone here done the Auschwitz Birkenau tour?)

I've done Auchwitz and Birkenau.
Never again! Glad i went the once. Really powerful places.
Can't get my head round humans treated other humans in those ways.

As for Krakow, really nice town.

Yes, it will be a bit morbid and bleak trek to see Auschwitz I would imagine but it's very high up on the list of places I want to see. I guess you're no doubt right that just one visit would be a sobering enough moment too but I want to take some amateur arty video footage while freely wandering about which is mainly the reason for the journey, with the city of Krakow being a bonus to check out on the same short trip. A mate of mine works with a Krakow, Polish girl in the UK and will be getting some tips off her before going.

Never saw anything whilst i was there. But maybe it goes on away from the centre.
