More than 450,000 Dutch lab animals destroyed

In the Netherlands, more than 450,000 laboratory animals were destroyed last year because they were superfluous, for example because they were the wrong gender or for other reasons.

A list published by the Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority shows that the animals included rats, mice and rabbits but also monkeys, dogs and cats. More than a million laboratory animals were bred last year, of which nearly half were apparently destroyed without being used. In addition to the suffering of the animals involved, these practices cost the industry at least two million euros a year. Animal rights organisations are demanding the money be invested in the development of testing techniques which do not require laboratory animals.

If they want to do experiments then do them on rapists and murderers.

I know people will argue that experiments are needed for scientific breakthrough but the animals used in this sector are a tiny proportion compared to the make-up industry.

There are an increasing amount of ethical companies producing good products.
Unfortunately there are big ironies within this industry. e.g. people trying to be ethical by buying animal free testing products from The Bodyshop, not knowing that The Bodyshop is now owned by L'oreal who will happily take their money and laugh all the way to their animal testing labs.

Before a new medicine comes out onto the market, they are widely tested on animals, before the human trials begin. If we abolish the animal testing, which stops possibly lethal drugs from reaching the human testing stage of this process, it would become almost impossible to recruit volunteers as the testing would become much more dangerous. You say that prisoners should be used. We are not in Indonesia, and we treat our prisoners with a little more respect than often they showed their victims. Leading by example and all.

Tongue in cheek remark about murderers and rapists but i would still prefer testing to be done on them than other animals.
There is no need for animal testing.
There are many testing procedures currently available meaning no tests on any animals or humans before a drug or medicine is deemed safe.
This however is a much more costly procedure.
It boils done to money and profit and firms like glaxo smith kline are only interested in profit. The government is deeply involved of course because medical firms can easily hold them to ransom. It is a similar relationship to which the government has with oil companies. e.g. companies like shell need the price of oil to be $9 a barrel to break even, it is currently about $75 and they can charge the consumer what they want stating recession, tough times, without the threat of government interference and it's not all about tax.
So there are alternatives to animal testing but they are too expensive for the medical drug oligarchs.
These firms are torturing animals to save money, that is why i am against it when there is alternatives.

Animal testing is always the most cost-effective method. It is always the most time-effective method. It is usually done with the utmost compassion towards the animal and certainly without undue cruelty. Simulations and other methods are simply not as useful.

The photographs used by the animal-rights protester on their placards or their leaflets are usually very old and almost entirely irrelevant.

The arguments used by the anti-vivisection crowd are usually flawed and ignorant, lacking the basic understanding of what is being achieved by scientists and why.

I am pro-vivisection. The anti-vivisection lobby have long lied to the public, exaggerated cruelties which occurred only in the past, they ignore the logic of science because its leaves them without an argument.
IMO the leading lights of such time wasting groups should go get jobs instead of spending their time being a public nuisance and spouting inaccuracies. These leaders would do better as productive members of society instead of their current chosen positions as bringers of civil unrest, liars and of course literally digging up dead bodies to bring unnecessary torment to families who do little more than breed rodents.

I'm glad that they tested things that stopped my 7 year old niece from being in pain when she was dying from a brain tumor, the same way I'm glad the pills my brother was on after his tripple heart bypass kept him from being in pain and dying, saying anything other than we need some pharmaceuticals is not only ignorant but it's also fucking stupid.

Really? Dude your blinded, pharama-companies create drugs that save lives, its that simple.

Animal testing is a evil, but one we need to unfortantly. I do not agree with it for cosmetic testing as thats a waste of a life, but for medical testing i think there is logic in it.

That said i wish it didnt happen, and perhaps one day science will progress to bypass this technique, at the moment it hasnt.
