Long term visits?

What would you recommend for long terms visits for about 3 months? Can a U.S. citizen get apartments/housing around Amsterdam? Or is it more difficult if you're not a EU citizen? How should I go about this?

I don't necessarily need to stay in Amsterdam since I'm pretty sure everything costs more over there compared to the surrounding cities.

I'm ok with staying outside of Amsterdam where it's cheaper, Den Haag, Rotterdam, (those are the only two cities I've seen recommended, not sure where else) and just visiting Amsterdam by train a couple times a week.

I'm trying to find some places in the surrounding city where I could find decent rates on apartments/housing for a 3 month stay. Prefer to be around coffeeshops with decent rates in those areas, don't want to get charged tourist rates etc..

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Try Haarlem. It's only a 20 minute train ride to/from Amsterdam. There are also coffeeshops aplenty.
