EU citizens unaware of airline delays damages
05/11/2009

Airlines passengers are often not aware they are entitled up to EUR 600 compensation when their flights are delayed or cancelled, says the lower house of parliament.

The Hague – Airline passengers from the European Union have not been accurately informed of their rights to be compensated in case of flight delays or cancellations, says the Dutch lower house of parliament..

Air travellers from the EU are entitled up to EUR 600 compensation, but most are not aware of their rights. Most passengers accept a free overnight stay and a meal in an airport hotel as sufficient compensation for their inconvenience.

MPs in the lower house are urging Transport Minister Camiel Eurlings to take action against the airlines who should be obliged to inform their clients about the refund scheme.

They also want Eurlings to raise the matter in Brussels, because similar problems occur in other EU member states.

Compensation scheme applies to only EU citizens. EU citizens who have a dispute with an airline about refunds for delayed or cancelled flights from Dutch airports can register their complaint and demand compensation.

All airlines associated with the Board of Airline Representatives in the Netherlands (BARIN) are obliged to take part in the compensation scheme.

The scheme which only applies to EU citizens allows them to get a refund for the air tickets. They can either do so by writing to "Geschillencommissie Luchtvaart", P.O. Box 90600, 2509 LP The Hague, The Netherlands or calling 31 70 3105326.

Non-Dutch speaking EU citizens can click here http://www.degeschillencommissie.nl/Documenten/ECC.pdf for more information.

last november klm cancelled the flight with 5 mins notice...passengers travelling further on connecting flights were told to go home and try next day, those only going to amsterdam were ....after nearly 7 hours with no info/food or anything were grudgingly given a 10 eoro voucher...........so i figure klm owe me another 590 euro..................it would have been quicker to travel by train and ferry.....just to note, when i mentioned the passenger charter hung in the terminal on th wall(hidden behind the vending machines),security was called and proceed to hint if i pushed the matter further i'd be thrown out o the airport!!!! i was polite, quiet in manner and still this happened!!! KLM and norwich airport suck ass........now i either use ferry or travel to stansted (both a lot cheaper!!)

Ok i couldnt find the link i was talking about earlier! i think it was skyteams website or something,But the jist of it went like KLM have an obligation to put you up in a hotel if need be + a meal voucher for 10 euros after 5 hours waiting & so on,But i have found a travel forum with tons of stuff associated with KLM gripes! worth a look.

There is a " compensation and assistance" form to download & you can take you case from there if the delay/damage or whatever was severe enough.

i wouldn't have minded an hour or so but after 6 hours i'm not happy.as i'm losing coffeeshop time.....worst of it all is the fact it's the shortest distance flight from the uk to amsterdam, although easyjet from stansted was the shorter flight time.......shame flybe pulled the route they were cheaper by about 95 gbp than KLM and more reliable than KLM....oh well stelios will get my money for the time being ...unless someone like fybe makes a return to the local airport and does the cheap flights
