Oldest and craziest memories of trips from 80s and 90s

Post by templeball »

To any of the older members, fancy sharing some of your more bonkers memories of what Dam used to be like?? Hope this is the right place for this topic.

Just to start it off....

Scoring from mad hippies on houseboats in the early 80's because they had the best and cheapest dope and it was better than the first coffeshops for imported weed, and how cool was it sitting on someones houseboat getting wasted watching the ducks

running away from packs of junkies when there were more of them than tourists sometimes

watching guys from the Bulldog in its earlier days all pile out and severely kickbox into uncosciousness some poor waster who over-stepped the line (made me realise what a thin line it is out there sometimes) - and sitting ALL DAY in their downstairs video room when they used to show whole movies

Happy Families (i think it was called this)- a legendary place, coffee shop for locals, state subsidised at one point, free coca cola or coffee when you went in, they had an actual cinema in the back with movies every few hours throughout the day, I weep when I think of that place, anyone else ever find it??

Only place in the world where you could get the best imported weeds in one place from mexico, Colombian (full of seeds, more than 50% by weight and it was expensive sometimes too for the good ones), Durban Poison, loads of different jamaican varieties (red Beard if you were very very lucky), and Thai sticks then were mindwarping, big fat sticky buds, very different to the mass produced red/blue string stuff we see now, good thai then was the equivalent to the Amnesia/Super Silver Hazes, ie very trippy

Staying on huge Botels behind the station, dirt cheap, no smoking signs everywhere (wooden boat after all) but every corridor reeked, noone gave a toss, very cramped bunks suitable for dwarves (im 6'2'') and the generators coming on at 5am which was like being held at Guatanomo, torture when your head is already aching from the Thai attack from the night before.

Anyone else...... :o :o

Great stuff :-), my 1st trip was in 2001 as a 17 year old college boy, didnt really know what to expect, all i knew is that it was legal to smoke weed out there.

The 1st coffeeshop i went in was Happy Feelings (formally Global Challange).which was about 100 yards from our Hostel (The Hans Brinker on Kerkstraat). All they had on the menu for weed was Purple Haze, Silver Haze, Bubblegum and Thai. I remember getting some Bubblegum, i cant remember the price but i paid in Guilders and it worked out like £10 for 2grams. One evening the shop was full of around 30 people all from my college, it was like a student Union..... a little bit different from the "good old days" that Templeball talks about.

Great thread! The thai-of-dreams....ahhhh, glad someone else remembers it! IMHO the hydro-hazes now have a more complicated buzz whereas the old-school thai was pure tripsville! I understand Sanementereng does some of the best import weed available in 'dam at the moment and will be heading there in couple o weeks in the hope....!

First trip was in 1997, dutch were still using the Guilder, muchies were more than the weed, dollar was strong to the guilder, and junkies/panhandlers were all over the place. Do not miss the junkies/panhandlers (their is a lot less of them) do miss the strong dollar, and the guilders was a very pretty money. The bigest change was the tobbaco ban, it is very cool for pure smokers like me, however the Bluebird built a tabbaco room were my faviorate seat was, that was a bummer for me.

Happy Families, it rocked!! Id love it if there was someone else who went to this unbelievable place and could tell their tale. I am not exaggerating when I say drinks were free, no tourists at all (well, just me and my looney mate, but in those days I had a ponytail down to my waist so I looked the part), you had to be able to hold your own in a street sort of way as many of the local colombian national dish dealers used to hang out there and would come up offering their ware. I was very anti all that and used to moan about them (very quietly!). One year we went and they were building something out the back. The next year they had installed a full-on cinema, proper screen and seats in rows, all free and apparently government funded, probably under some youth club funding scheme?? How about that eh..And yes you could smoke in the cinema!! What heaven that place was... :) :)

I have the same hand written journal for ALL of my trips (well, most of the 10). My first...

9/24/96 - 9/29/96

Stayed at the DELTA Hotel (with the room overlooking the Damrak) and our first stop was (of all places)

PARADISE "Super Afghani" hasj 1.7 grams 25 fl (guilder)
"Silver Haze" 1.6 g for 25 fl (garbage)
"Northern Lights" price unknown but decent review

GOA "Thai" 2 g 25 fl

JOLLY JOKER "Skunk TNT" 1.7 g 25 fl AMAZING review - pale green and so much white resin the table was covered.

PICK UP THE PIECES
"Red Leb"

SENSI This place was GREAT!
"Garlic Bud"
"Jack Flash"

GREY AREA
"Original Bubblegum" 1.7 g 25 fl
"AK 47"
"Mongolian Indica" (my favorite!)

BLUE BIRD
"Harim Sharif" .9 g 25 fl
"Malana Cream"

BULLDOG CAFE
"Snow White" I'm surprised, pretty good review!

SENSI
"Haze #5" AMAZING, best bud I ever had to that point!

BLUE BIRD
"Durban Poison" 1.7 g 10fl
"Vietnam" 3 g 25 fl
"Temple Ball" 1.3 g 25 fl (FANTASTIC review)

MELLOW YELLOW
"Nigerian Bud"

SENSI
"Sativa Delight"

GRASSHOPPER
"Orange Bud" (Rather good, actually)

GREY AREA
"House Skunk" amazing, they ALL were at GA

It was an amazing trip and left the wife and I hooked! I do remember TONS and TONS of street hustlers - almost intimidating at first until we got into the swing of it. It REALLY was bad when you compare it to today. The RLD was genuinely sketchy (and pretty good fun). I'll have to dig out the REAL crazy stories :D

My main memory from my first trip in 1985 was how much more seedy the RLD was - bestiality and other weird shit in shop windows, glad that`s gone!

Lets see my first of many trips to A'Dam started in 1979 while being stationed in West Germany and lived there from 79-82 and went to A'Dam around 20 times in that time span an have been going ever since but my memories of those times is cloudy but remember the cs Mellow Yellow an Rushland in those days. Lot of street vendors selling there goods in those days before all the cs they have now. Since A'Dam decided to allow cs the street vendors are by far less than those of beginning days of cs.

I have vague memories of Amsterdam as a 6 year old. One evening we went out for pancakes, and on the way my Dad "got us lost" through the RLD.

The questions still remains unanswered " Mummy Mummy, whys that lady got no clothes on?"
No Victim? No Crime.
