LOL...well, I certainly wouldn't put myself that high up on a pedestal. TBH, when I'm intoxicated from anything I usually become fairly self-concious and automatically attempt to keep to myself. I'm pretty outgoing when sober but become quite reserved/shy when baked or moderately drunk. I'm one of those that doesn't like to draw attention to myself.
That being said I feel like I almost always have a good awareness of how intoxicated I am and whether I can function socially or not. If I'm really, really stoned I'll most likely sit there for as long as it takes for me to feel comfortable transporting myself. Personally, I wouldn't try and "shuffle" off somewhere because I'd be terribly self-concious. Although, I have to admit that the visual image of YOU doing so makes me smile and chuckle a bit
Try not to feel bad about it. You shuffling down the street for a block or so is probably one of the least frightening/intimidating sights one could behold

Haha...that's not really the issue. Of course there are responsible drinkers. I happen to be one of them.
Niall, not once in my post did I say, "All that drink get drunk and are irresponsible ruffians."...so I'm not sure where the stereotype issue came from.
the ban all the bars comment, possibly read into it too much. However if you take my Guinness away, ill drain you and drink that.
Really, the issue is that there are a LOT of irresponsible people that drink and then proceed to cause a scene because of it. My point was that those that are high/stoned don't stumble out of the coffeeshops and then start fights with each other, start yelling, run in to people and knock them over, or fall flat on their face in the street passed out. You have to admit that those events DO happen outside of bars. No, it most likely doesn't happen daily or even every other day...but it DOES happen. It would be extremely, EXTREMELY rare to see any of that occur outside of a coffeeshop.
It happens alot in England i agree, however there is a large amount of irresponsible cannabis users as well who sit around all day on the bread roll. However i wouldnt want to ban cannabis because of this. It might not happen to everyone, but it DOES happen.
Let's say some children happen to be walking past a bar when a group of drunken idiots, who were just fighting inside, get thrown out in to the street to continue their activities. That is certainly going to be a frightening situation for a child. Do you not agree Do you really think this is an impossibility? Indeed, so why should we ban bars? Surely that would make things worse. I personally have seen many, MANY bar fights break out and escalate to the point where multiple parties get thrown out only to start beating on each other as soon as they're outside. Indeed, i have seen many friends and pupils i teach go from motivated pupils in year 8 to in year 10 being spaced out drop outs, not all of those that use cannabis im sure, but again it happens to some, should be ban cannabis? No, same as we shouldnt ban bars. I find it extremely hard to believe that if you've frequented bars that you've never witnessed this. It makes me upset to think that there would be children present when this happened. Maybe, i think that kids see alot these days, violence is gloried in the media in many places, fighting i dont think phases them. Fights happen in rugby ( Hockey in the states i guess ) kids see fights all the time, i dont think it would really bother kids too much tbh. Unless we're talking about young kids, but i wouldnt want to hang around with little kids outside a coffeeshop either.
To make it clear; I don't have a problem with bars or consuming alcohol. I've been to plenty of bars and consumed plenty of alcohol. I just know that bad things CAN and WILL happen in bars and I don't think it's a safe/constructive environment for children. Your right, although i spend alot of time in the pub in Offaly as a child with my Grandad, never done me harm, in fact some of my fondest memories is sitting on the bar eating crisps drinking old style lemonade ( the cloudly type ) watching all the old farmers and drinkers enjoy their night/day. I dont think a coffeeshop enviroment is good for kids.
Try to not take it so personally and view it from the perspective of a parent whose children would have to walk past a drinking establishment late in the day, or at night, to get to/from home. How would you feel if a group of people exploded out the doors and trampled your kids; or to a lesser extent just really scared the hell out of them and they had problems getting to sleep that night? I dont take it personally, i disagree with the idea of banning bars and the stereotyping of all drinkers.
The only other thing I would like to add is I'm sure there's a much different crowd in the "hometown pub" than there is in the Amsterdam centruum. Unfortunately, the attitude of, "We're in Amsterdam!! Let's party as hard as we can and get stupid!! YEEAAHHHHH!!!" is much too prevelant in the area.
Also, I think I may have missed a post or two as I wasn't aware they're trying to ban bars completely. I thought they were just trying to make sure they weren't established in areas close to schools. I completely agree that banning them altogether would be absolutely ridiculous and would certainly compound the problem.
Oh...and yes, I was talking about young children. Kids over the age of...geez, I dunno...say 12 or 13 would probably be okay *shrug*.

Indeed man. Perhaps this is a cultural difference between the traditional drinking associated in England which might not be in place throughout the world?

You know...now that you mention it you're completely correct. Even over here in the States it seems like a lot people enter bars with a bad attitude right off the bat. At least, that's what I've observed on many occaisions. From what I've heard the scene in England is much different.
Damn...I'd like to make it over there to test it out for myself. A comfortable and relaxed hometown-type establishment sounds pretty good right now *looks at the clock - 30 minutes until work is done*
I think there is a scene like that here as well, some pubs are obviously pretty hard going and bars and clubs there can be drunken pricks causing trouble. But i dont associate them with the traditional pubs i frequent and was brought up around, not my picture but this is of a pub called the greyhound in Berkshire, not my photo but i have had a pint there on my travels and it is rather beautiful and good example of English country pubs.
That place is absolutely beautiful! I must admit I'm fairly jealous, my friend
I think the mis-understanding is probably related to the bars your thinking of look nothing like that? I hope the pub scene develops with you guys, its a nice place to be from time to time.
Should visit if you get a chance, i always feel bad that most tourists get stuck in london their whole trip, the lakes is wonderful.
Paulli, there was a fair amount of damage done, but we sandbagged the place and moved important shit upstairs. I have to abmit having a rip and watching a river run down the high street was something i will remember for a long while. It'll take months to sort out the mess up here, Christmas is on hold, however on a good note. The pub was serving again last night!
