Residence Permit for 3+ month stays?

I'm planning on visiting Amsterdam sometime in the middle of 2010. I would like to stay for more than 3 months but, it's not allowed, unless I get a residence permit to extend the stay for more than months.

Has anybody here got a residence permit before? Is it difficult, even if you can show you have sufficient funds for the time period that you want to stay?

I thought about going through an immigration attorney but, I'm not trying to move there, just want to get a residence permit to extend the stay. I don't know if I should still go through an immigration attorney or not. If so, does anybody have any recommendations?

Thanks

According to the IND Residence Wizard, http://www.ind.nl/EN/verblijfwijzer/ , it is not possible for a US Citizen to stay longer than 3 months on Holiday. Here is what the wizard said:

Holiday longer than 3 months

It is not possible to apply for a short stay visa for a period exceeding 3 months. If you wish to stay in the Netherlands for longer than 3 months, you must apply for a residence permit. In order to be eligible for a residence permit you need a purpose of residence other than holiday and you must meet the conditions of the purpose of residence you have stipulated.

This isnt possible. If you overstay your visa you will have serious issues when you try to leave the country, as you will have been staying illegally.

I'd of thought that if you leave the Netherlands and visit another country you would be ok, ie UK, France etc. Just make sure you get your passport stamped.

That won't work either, Americans can only visit for 90 days in 180 day period. From the IND Residence Wizard:

You wish to stay in the Netherlands for a maximum of 3 months. You come from a country that is not subject to a visa requirement.

This means you do not need to apply for a visa and that you have a free period of 3 months in any 6-month period to stay in the Schengen territory.

This means that, if you have been in the Schengen territory for an uninterrupted period of 3 months, you must leave the Schengen territory for a period of 3 months before you can use your free period again. This is set out in the Schengen Convention and the Schengen Implementation Agreement.
Although you do not need a visa you must meet the following conditions:

* you must have a valid passport
* you must have sufficient funds
* you must be able to provide evidence of your travel objective
* you must not constitute a risk to public order.

Although you do not need a visa, a check may be made at the border or by the Aliens Police whether you meet the conditions for entry into the Netherlands.

Upon arrival in the Netherlands you must report to the local Aliens Police within 3 working days. If you will be in the Netherlands for less than 3 days or will be staying in a hotel, you do not need to report to the Aliens Police.

Thanks for the info. Does anybody have contact info (address and phone) for the Alien Police in Amsterdam or Haarlem? Or how can I find out when I get there, I'm guessing the airport employees should know? I tried to google and sent an e-mail to IND, not sure when I'll get a response. Couldn't get any info. Everywhere they just say, "contact the local aliens police" but, don't give any contact info.

After 90 days, at Centraal Station just jump on the Thalys, high speed "Red Train" and take a break in Paris for a few days before you return to Amsterdam. The train takes you to the Gare Du Nord station in Paris and only takes 3 hours and 18 minutes.

That want work because France is a Schengen Country and crossing the border will not reset the clock on your visa.
