As a fellow gringo , I know one of the things we enjoy on our trips to the NL is getting out and about in the country ...theres some awesome smaller towns and cities out there. Where you just go "WOW What a place . How come we can't do towns like this"... If I could point to one particular town it would be Zutphen in Gelderland Province, town of 30000 or so ...3 nice CSes ...got that medieval movie set look ...(see pics in sig if you want) ...and the local 4 star hotel can often be booked real cheap - see this sites booking link. (we got it at 39 E a night last July )...We've always driven , but think it's about an hour / half train ride from AMS ... Just a thought should you decide to stay in the NL ...If its "all about the smoke " Leeuwarden has the best CS scene we've found out of AMS , and that includes Haarlem ...
Happy planning

Thanks for the info Epsilon! I really do want to check out some of the nearby towns...probably nothing that isn't less than 90 minutes by train from the Dam as I'd like to be back in town by evening. I'll have to read up on Zutphen - sounds interesting.

That's a good list Dazed. I would add Home Grown Fantasy to your list. There Cheese is not to be missed. Also, I think one Kandinsky or one Abraxas is plenty, that goes for any "chain" Coffee Shop. You are just rehashing the menu, no pun intended: well kind of.
I would also spend some time im Haarlem. There are some really good shops there. Try Birdy for the "Jelly" or Knetter. Also, try any of the Willy Wortel Shops. The NYCD at WW Sativa is outstanding. Enjoy your trip!

Dude Dont make a plan like "going here" and so on because as soon as your there the plan goes to shit and you end up going places you didnt plan and missing places you planned to go to.
One convenient location... in Africa.

Different strokes for different folks brother! Personally, I need a plan, otherwise I won't hit up all the shops I want to. That's not to say I'm not flexible. Even visiting 3 or 4 shops a day won't take up a few hours of my day. I'm not one of those people that camps out in a coffeeshop. I doubt I'll spend more than 45 minutes to an hour in any one shop. Undoubtedly I'll end up visiting shops that aren't on my list, plus I plan on doing a day in Haarlem (Frans Hal museum, Corrie Ten Boom house, Teylers museum) and a half day in Zandvoort and a half day in Beverwijk. Plus I travel solo, which in my opinion is the only way to go. No arguing about where to go or what to do next!

i haven't really had that problem traveling with people anywhere. i tent to go with people who have similar interests and if a disagreement starts about where to go just split up and meet again in a few hrs.
educating myself and waiting for the next trip.

Now here is someone after my own heart.

I got a chuckle out of this thread, because we went to Amsterdam with the same idea. I had a list of shops and the Mrs had a map and plans to see tourist sites.

Well both plans hit the shitter almost immediately. Yeah, we managed to get our share of sight seeing, and we smoked at about 25 odds coffee shops.

It was brilliant.

In the end, the list was great, but we almost always stopped at any shop we crossed. It was fun to scratch off pre-determined stops, and also very enjoyable :D :D :D to add a random shop to our adventures.

Either way you can't go wrong. Have a great time... and if I could suggest a place or two:

Homegrown Fantasy and Coffeeshop Centraal.

Safe travels and great highs!!!
Amsterdam dreaming.............

The funny thing is that the more I smoke the more organized and focused I get! It's like I'm on a mission. Shit, if it hadn't been for weed there's no way I would have been able to graduate from college at 38!

Undoubtedly I'll hit up shops that aren't on this list, but you better believe I'll make it to each and every one of these shops! I probably will only buy 1 or 2 grams at each shop, but if I come across any white widow, blueberry, or northern lights 5 gram specials I'll definitely do those as those are my three favorites. Not really much of a hash man but I'll pick up a gram here and there to mix with my weed although I certainly won't waste my money on any iceolator!

Appreciate all the advice though. I'll have my netbook so I'll be updating as I go letting everyone know where I was and what I bought (with pics). Getting closer now...come on March 9!!

I highly recommend buying a Moleskine Citybook Amsterdam. Look it up,I find it indispensable! I always hit up the greenplace on nieuwmarkt first for solid quality bud, then explore a mix of shops i haven't been to, and old faves.

Just bought it online at Powell's books here in Portland for $4.98 new - will pick it up later today. Seems like a great way to keep my travelogue instead of whipping out the netbook all the time!

Well, I don't get to the Dam very often so I want to visit as many as I can, but I'm realistic about it. I figure 4 a day, give or take, is good enough. Plus I want to make it down to Haarlem. Also, visiting a good number of shops is an excellent way to see the city as I'll most likely be walking to most of them.

sure, you should see as much of this beatiful city as possible! but you should also sometimes take your time to chill in a nice spot. its better to leave some shops out instead of getting in stress because of your list :P
