Nepal

Post by DazedandConfusedinOR »

Hope this is the right place for this post!

Just wondering if any forum members have been to Kathmandu in Nepal? The flights are fairly expensive from Portland, Oregon (best I could find was $1550 RT), but from what I've been able to gather from the Web it's ridiculously cheap to stay there. I imagine I would have a hard time spending even $1000 while there for housing, food, and hash.

For example, even though hash is illegal there, I read that it is fairly easy to get and you could get it for about $1 per gram. Guest houses in Thamel seem to be in the $5 to $15 a night range.

Does anyone have any firsthand experience of traveling there? Just curious. If I went, it would be in November 2010 or March 2011. Thanks!

id like to do a trip to nepal and or india in 2011. the airline i get cheap passes on doesn't fly there(they fly to india though) so i did some research and the cheapest/shortest route there for me is to fly from seattle to vancouver, vancouver to hk, hk to bangladesh and bangladesh to nepal. long/expensive process but id love to see the himalayas and smoke some good hand rubbed high atltude hash.

Sorry to drag up this ancient thread, But by a coincidence i have literally just retuned from Nepal

I paid £370 for my flights from london, flew to Katmandu, went to the national park, Then to Lumbini (birthplace of buhdda) and then to the Himalayan Shangri-la known as Pohkara.

In my opinion Pohkara is the place to be, a little bit more expensive than Katmandu, but the location is 500% better, its next to a lake in a cleft in the mountains, stays hot all winter (i was there from nov till feb and it was on average 25c, and in 3 months it rained for 1/2 an hour!)

And the weed!

I was buying 12g of black for 1000Rs ( £8 ) and Mountain weed 12g for 500Rs ( £4 ) A friend was buying Pollen, 20g for 2000Rs ( £16 )

Its simply amazing,

Cheers. Thanks for the info. I still want to go, but the airfare is pretty expensive from the West Coast of the US so we'll see. I mean it's dirt cheap once you're there so I guess it works out in the end. We'll see what the next year brings! Thanks for the first-hand report though.

Yea thats a ridiculous amount of money, i was there for 4 months and i spent £400 maybe, so perhaps $600.

Put it this way i was staying in a hotel room with hot shower TV and double beds for 350Rs a night (£3 / $4.50ish) and that was a nice room, i also stayed in one that was perfectly fine just basic and that was £1.20 a night. its crazy cheap.

DazedandConfused i just talked to friend of mine that researchs Buddhism and Hinduism about his time in Nepal. He said it's changed alot from 10 years ago, alot more tourist orientated. But possibly the price your quoting there is a bit expensive? I dont know what he payed, it was a quick phone call, i was stoned and forgot to ask man. I'll get back to you with what he payed man.

Goa is spectacula man, amazing beach parties. Expensive flights but after that it's quite cheap, even in the touristy areas. The seafood is something else man.

Cheap just putting like this train from New deli to Mumbai 1500 rupes= 30-35$ 18hour train ride! guest houses hotel/whatev they call them start at 1$ if you sleep at a temples can even be cheaper (free) if you go North near border alot of towns like Dareeling youll have to take Jeep ride or if any BUSES « you got to watch cause they try to push tourist to buy the high price tickets!

buy souvenirs? always bring price to 1/2 of what he asking and show the sells person you dont care to walk away « if you start walking alway 99% chance he call yuo back wit either the price you wanted it wit few ruppes extra « Say NO! he should bring it down at the price you willing to pay ;)

Always bring bottle water « watch the bottle b4 buying to see if cap been played wit! « this goes wit most countries in that area!
