A bit of a mis-quote there Sir Niall. You also forgot to add the bit where you told me off before I told you off.

Fair dues, i didnt consider what i was saying a personal attack on you to the level of stating Fuck you. I was merely trying to point out that by making it into a competition of my county has more inventors of yours it could be percived as a arrogence, as arrogance means a percived inferioty of another, in this example based on the number of inventors to be produced by one country vs. another and the irony of protesting against the title of a post while slipping into the sterotype protrayed in the video you claim to not be true.

I didnt misquote you, that was your respone.

We are all humans and all living things have so much more in common than not. The the fact that we are all the same and only differ by truly subtle social and cultural differences may make people even more angry.

By the way, I am American and I do think there are a lot of fat, stupid, arrogant people here (my neighbor included - but I still invite him in for smoke every now and then).

At the same time - weight, intellect, and arrogance (or in many cases haughty contemptuousness) are not bound by national or cultural lines. The fact is these things are more often than not found in equal measures in ALL countries and cultures, and furthermore defined differently in each of these countries and cultures and from person to person within these delineations. It also may be generally caused more by socioeconomic conditions of local environments relative to a country or culture as a whole, and should not (and cannot) be measured or defined across nationalities, races, creeds, etc.

Well. That's my two cents. By the way, this forum is great and I appreciate all of the great advice, stories, and opinions. Sometimes I'm arrogant, and sometimes people walk all over me...but it has nothing to do being American. Peace.

pretty much nailed it on the head imo. as iv said alot of these people who think americans are fat, arrogant, etc havent even visited the us(atleast from the ones iv talked to) just like the americans iv talked to who stereotype everyone from the continent of europe a snobby, know it all, overly opinionated , weak, etc haven't visited europe. alot of people have a bad habit generalizing a group based on a few. a bad habit imo. iv visited 20-35 diff countries on 4 diff continents and prob visited close to 100 diff cities and iv encountered, fat, arrogant, know it alls in alot of them. but that doesn't accurately rep the avg citizen of that area. most of them have been cool.

to the op. your point could have been taken better had you avoided telling folks to f off and such.

it happens. once you started saying f you and america vs so and so country/america is beter etc it just kind of became un productive. all im saying. theres alot of double standards around the world not only between countries but between races as well. bottom line there are ignorant people everywhere. just a fact of life. they dwell in america, the uk, zimbabwe you name it. they are everywhere. luckily there dont seem to be a ton on this forum. seems alot on the channels though.

I really wasn't trying to say America was better or smarter. I know it came across that way, and I'm sorry if I offended anyone. Something about the way that CNNN show went about their little comedy skit really bothered me. You would never see an American show go to Australia to try to make their citizens look dumb and ignorant. Doing that type of comedy routine within your own country is cool, but going into another country to do it shows alot of arrogance in my opinion. It becomes more of a my country is smarter than yours routine when done in another country.

Of course these prog’s are just lazy tv I think, and a few years ago they would get a showing on some channels and then be gone never to surface again. However now, the internet gives every little bit of TV rubbish, as well as the good stuff a life of its own. Following this and similar threads is interesting in that we can now get to actually have conversations and debate about issues with a much wider and diverse group of people than our workmates and friends around us so that has to be a positive thing . I think that I used to feel that even acknowledging the junk just helped perpetuate it, but I now think differently and I feel as I did during the Irish troubles that denying one of the protagonists the opportunity to put their cause to people through the mainstream media, as Margaret Thatcher so infamously did with the Republicans, ie. “To deny them the oxygen of publicity” was counter productive and we would have been better served had we opened the windows and let in the fresh air and we could have made up our own minds.
Whoops I’m rambling again.
Debate, yes good, and this subject about stereotypes has shown up that in fact on this Forum we recognize them for what they are and we also recognize that it is just Tabloid TV and pretty crap stuff at that.

Stereotype = Tribe of choice, and here's mine.

While we're talking stereotypes....

Australians: a group of loud, alcoholic rough-necks whose idea of a good time is throwing up on the hood of your car.
