Coming to Amsterdam with the Folks

I have myself been to Amsterdam and Holland 10 times now, and unfortunately due to my experience and knowledge of the fine city/country, my parents have roped me in to taking them on a tour for the weekend in March.

Now my reason for putting this thread up is although I have been alot of times to Dam and know my way around like the back of my hand. I am a little clueless as to where to take them. Baring in mind they are in to their late 50's and are not interested that much in the drug scene any more and only my dad wants to really check out the Red lights lol.

So far I have the markets, van gough museum, ann frank house and the main shopping areas.

Also I have to add that I will be stoned from when I hit the ground until we leave, just to put up with them both. So I must be able to find these places suggested.

Any advice?

had some friends (50+) take me out there in December im a good 20 years younger than them mentioned i would take em to some nice places but in reality i was the tour guide totally ruined my trip, they weren't into walking to my fav coffeeshops, nagged constant. if he wasn't my boss i would of gone crazy. definitely have your own time every day, your in Amsterdam and there's smoking to be done, and the best places they liked were albert cuyp market and the Heineken brewery they thought the free red light tour guide thing was alright but i didnt go to that

Keukenhof Gardens for a day from Amsterdam at tourist shop on rokin got a deal wit train to Keukenhof Gardens and entrie for about 20euros each! « they open last weekend of march some years first week of april!

you could bring them to Zaanse schans see some historical houses mildmils train there and back is bout 8euro just make sure you get off near the brige or youll have to take the bus Zaanse is part of zaanstad about 15min train ride north from amsterdam!

i know they are 2 thing outside Amsterdam but i think 2 thing close to amsterdam to be seen by everyone who been there!

We have not booked the flights yet but will probably be mid march.

If you can, walk through the RLD early the first morning you are there, then take them back when the lights come on. The transformation is IMO very descript.

Check out the VVV for one or two day passes, they will cover admittance to museums, and also a tram card for unlimitted rides.

Check out the Amsterdam Historical museum, they follow the history of the city from a fishing spot to were it is today. Make shure to point out the display from the present theu have the Mello Yellow Dealer Bag, that will help them understand the Dutch tolerance life style.

Check out the "Church in the Attic" , located in the RLD, also a testamonial to Dutch tolarance.

I am a 57 year old tourist to Amsterdam, and still have not seen it all.

The other posts about "Kitchen Garden" Keukenhof and Zaanse Schans are great out of town sights, as is LIden the town you go to to get to Keukenhof, they have a great windmill museum.

How much time are you going to be there with your parents.

Another thought, if you want your parents to experiance a coffee shop, I would take them to the Paradox or the BlueBird first thing in the morning. Both of these shops have a real good vibe in the early AM, for our age group. In fact when we were at the BlueBird last, they helped us set up both vaperizors, one for weed the other for hash. Our age group tips well also. Enjoy your time, you just might discover that your parents are people also.

Yer lol I know they are people also. The use to hippys lol but I think they decided never to go back to the stuff. Thanks for the tips. Oh and we are going for a long weekend so am going to try and do the main things.

Well that all went to shit!! Thanks to Iceland we never got away in the end and the damn hotel charged us 200 euros for not even staying. they said because we didn't cancel 2 days in advance that we didn't qualify for a refund even though we only found out flight was cancelled 7 hours before we were leaving....

Hotel Damrak for anyone who wants to pass by and stick a finger up for bad business!!
