If you like to drink and smoke, there are plenty of places that ignore the law and allow cig and cannabis smoking. Most are outside the center.
Two in the Westerpark are Kamerz and Finnegan's Rainbow.

I suppose Kashmir Lounge would be another cannabis friendly bar. Might be a bit of a walk. You could always stop by Bij, which has been getting good reviews lately.

Is the Kashmir Lounge a coffeeshop or a bar?? Could be a great shout - pretty close to the area we are staying!

P.s.
Rookies holds a special place in my heart being the first coffeeshop I entered. We stayed at the Rookies apartment which used to be across the road nearly above the gift shop. The scary mushoom man now has a shop here too.... "a box and half of the mushrooms should be just nice....." my arse!!.... lol... never been such a mess
I always manage a smoke or two at Rookies every trip.. The staff have always been friendly and the gear is usually nice. The Thai here suprised me a few trips ago, first smoke of the day and started the day off perfectly. only around 4 or 5 euro a gram and perfect for a tobacco substitute later in the day.

I stayed at the Rookies on one of my solo trips mate - nice coffeeshop and they gave me a reduction on the weed from there!
Your mushroom story rings a few bells as well! Me and the girlfriend got some mexicans (Dry ones as well though they were meant to be illegal at the time?!) the first time we went to Amsterdam and I loved them. Laughed our heads off in the hotel and had a great time......... so next visit to Amsterdam me being me decided I would step up to the Hawaiians and buy two boxes! Freaked out in the room and spent the whole trip clutching the pillow in terror and praying for it to come to an end which it finally did about 6 hours later haha lesson learned for me!

Hey Arch... I was wrong in posting that earlier trip report.
