Going to Amsterdam for the first time with the missus in Feb.Neither of us smoke tobacco (although have in past) .I have only ever tried 2 joints years ago and both times were bad experiences . Think i may have overdone it on both occasions. My missus has never tried weed either.Want to experience a good high on my 3 day stay.Just wondering if its advisable for a noob to smoke early in the day if we want to see the sites as well or should i leave it till evening .Dont want to be out of my head in the daytime . If so what would be best for a morning pickmeup and what would be best for an evening smoke to chill out with. Also is it best to tell the budtender you are a noob or will you just come across as a bit of an annoying tourist twat.Going to be obvious enough when we sit down and cant roll for shit lol. Also do all coffeeshops provide roaches and papers or is it best to bring your own.Do i need a grinder or can i get away with just breaking it up myself.Sorry for all the noob questions.

alrite mate heres a few tips for ya
if your new to the smoking thing and you wanna do some sight seeing etc dont smoke to heavy in the day as weed in the dam is pretty strong for the most part. i tend to stick to sativa's in the day, which are strains that will give you a 'head high', and tend not to mong you out so much. Indica strains will give you more of a 'stoned' effect where your body doesn't wanna do much, these are perfect for chillin out on an evening when you have done your daily plans. this is what I do when I go with my g/f as she's not much of a smoker. speak to the budtenders, for the most part they are friendly people who are always willing to help, and coffeeshops such as dampkring, hunters and the greenhouse chain of shops have very good menu's with lots on info. outdoor strains such as thai also tend to be less of a heavy smoke than the indoor and hydro grown strains. if in doubt ask a budtender and really look on this site before you go theres tons of info in various threads on the forums. as most would tell you 'use the search'.
all coffeeshops provide papers and roaches but if you cant skin up ask a fellow toker of a budtender, some kind person will normally skin up for you, I would! If not buy some ready rolled CONES from a headshop. Its basically a hollow spliff you just fill up. Although its a stonger more concentrated 'hit' you could also use a bong to smoke, or a vape, somewhere like barney's is ideal for this method. As for a grinder you dont have to use 1 but I think think you get more out of your weed if you do, and its easier to skin up pure if its ground up. most coffeeshops will loan you a grinder but id buy a cheap METAL grinder so you always have 1 with you. when you there in feb as me and the missus are planning a trip mid feb. as for sightseeing id say the rijksmuseum, a good canal tour and anne franks house are a must for a 1st visit. Go to anne franks house early tho or be prepared to queue. just pace yourself on the smoke, dont worry what others think (we were all noobs once) and enjoy yourself man.

well dont be sorry, answering noob questions is what happens here so just ask away
as far as having a first good smoke is concerned there are many reports in the forum topic
travelogues (after or during) that the budtenders at the coffeeshop
basjoe are good with new smokers
so my suggestion is to go to
basjoe, tell them you are a new smoker and ask for their suggestions about having a first good smoke
chuzzwuzzer wrote:Do i need a grinder or can i get away with just breaking it up myself
you can do either, if you don't like sticky fingers then probably best to use a grinder, if you like to feel the weed you are about to smoke and get an idea about how wet or dry it is or how sticky or its aroma when broken up then break it up yourself
in any case good luck and have a great trip ...

Go out and see the sights during the day, have something good to eat, then go to a decent coffeeshop and explain your 'noobness' to the budtender. Buy on their recommendation and if they aren't too busy, ask if they could roll you a joint. Take the joint, some sugary drinks and chocolate back to where yer staying and blaze it. If it doesnt work out, eat the chocolate, drink the drink and stay on the bed.
If it goes well, then yer at the end of the beginning of yer 'noobness...ness". Goodluck.

I agree.
You also might stop by CS Central. The owner is also very respectable and will not lead a newbie the wrong way.
If you are dealing with someone whose "best intentions" are not 100-percent focused on the success of the shop (a bored part-time tender or a long time slacker, etc) you could get rooked.
I don't want to give the impression that there are all kinds of asshole budtenders out there, because there are only a few.
Just hoping that your first experience is the best possible, and that's what your budtender should be thinking too.
EDIT: PS, have a great trip!!!!

Made my first trip last April and my best advise to ANY first timer would be to simply listen to what alot of members here advise and scroll through as many topics on the board as you can and just absorb the info.
I took heed to what people said, researched the shit outta any Amsterdam related sites I found (this board was by FAR the best, hence why I'm still here) and feel that my trip wouldn't have gone any smoother (it really was perfect) without the help of what I learned here.
Have fun on your trip, chief.

Buy some weed that won't knock yer dick in the dirt (ask budtender), maybe even a preroll (they come with tobacco most of the time, but ask) take a toke or two and wait maybe 20 minutes. If you don't want to be bothered by rolling a joint, pick up small cheap pipe in town (easy to find). Sugary drinks are important, but I'd say stay clear of alcohol for sure. Maybe someone from here can meet you and the missus when you're in town. Most important, have fun and report back.

If you and your wife are not used to with the effects of Cannabis, I would error on the side of caution. The confusing and narrow streets and Bicycles heading right at you can be very challenging for even the most seasoned smoker. You could choose a Coffee Shop close to your hotel, after you have done your sightseeing. Also, you may want to try some light Hash. Just stay away from heavy Indica weed, ask your Bud tender to recommend something mellow. You should consider taking Panog up on his offer. It would be very nice to have a guide to help you maneuver your way through a new experience.

im not in anyway calling you a liar, but james & leo are 2 of the safest & chilled shop owners in the whole of amsterdam (possibly europe

) they sorted me out big time last week, i just cannot imagine james shouting at anyone, is it possible the 2he kicked out were maybe doing something they shouldn't, e.g, a sly line off the table

Some great tips on this thread already,

A lot of the coffeeshops these days offer a herbal "smoking mix" as a tobacco alternative. They have it up on the counter or in bowls on/near the tables. It's free and available for your use so just ask.
Definitely ask the budtender for advice, explain you're after a light/beginners smoke, most will be happy to talk to you for a bit and recommend a suitable strain. Go to some of the more highly recommended coffeeshops on this forum, they're rated for a reason. Somewhere close to the hotel is a big plus
