A high priced hotel? Or a hotel with a high price? There is a big difference.

I wonder why some folks will stay in a crap hotel (and I have stayed in a few myself) when you can be staying in a $200 or more a night 4 star double room in a great hotel with a lift and a shower and a tub and a big comfy queen bed and a nice flat screen TV for 55 euros ($80 USD) a night.

Or you can pay 45 euros for a 45 euro single room in some walk up the stairs dump.

Its like buying a $800 1978 Yugo for $800 vs buying a $7000 2008 Honda for $900. Who is the smarter car buyer?

Nonsence. Your opinion may be that, others, the complete opposite.
As has been states many times, some folks just need a clean bed, maybe a shower. Others like to be pampered. For you to take an issue with people who dont want to be pampered is a little bit of poor form In my opinion.

As a side note, do you happen to earn money from Priceline?
Just curious like :?

No I earn none. But I save myself and dozens of others $1000's.

I only post my opinion. I doubt I will ever try to post yours.

The info is for people who want very expensive hotel rooms for one star prices.

Those who want to pay full price for a one star room can do their own research

Enjoy your room (or your Yugo)

I sure did enjoy mine.:-)

I think I've decided on Hotel Vijaya.

They seem to have a favorable rating and any negative reviews of them are basically the same things that could also be found for Koopermoolen & Luxer, except the Vijaya is $200 cheaper for the stay and has an Indian dinner discount for guests! Big plus.

As for the question of why "people like us" go for higher priced hotels......

Some of us, like Twic said, would gladly splurge a bit more for a private shower or clean sheets. I don't have high standards by any means but if I'm flying all the way to Amsterdam from the US and already plan on spending a small fortune, what's a couple hundred more for a nicer hotel?

Private showers and clean sheets don't need to cost the earth .
Also I suppose it depends how much time your gonna spend in your room .
Most people are out most of the time , and come home too wrecked to notice what kind of shampoo is in the shower .

The last two 4 stars I stayed in via PL NYOP bidding were the NH Schiller and the NH Amsterdam Centre. Both had smoking rooms. I did not opt for one at the Schiller but I did at the AMS Centre (not the 3* NH City Centre)

My win for the Schiller was the only win for that hotel I have seen in over 2 years now. Not likely to get this one.

At the AMS Centre its the rooms on the 3rd floor. I got one with a view overlooking the sq for a full two weeks. (55 euros a night inc tax and fee for a double)

Now as I walked the halls on the 3rd floor I did get a wiff of the green now and then. And I smoked grass every night in my room without a problem. I would not do this with 5 people in a room having a loud party though.

I have stayed in over 100 hotels over my somewhat long life. The AMS Centre may have been the most quiet. Man did I sleep good.

If you bid and bid correctly (as in follow good advice) and you are after a 4 star at least right now the AMS Centre is the hotel you are most likely to get. At the $67-72 USD winning level its the only one we have seen come up in months.

But last summer the Carlton and the Caransa also came up at times or often. I am pretty sure but not positive that they have smoking rooms.

The Movenpick comes up now but only at higher bid levels. Closer to $79-$85 USD levels. I have no idea what their policy is but "I think" its a non-smoking one.

One final question for y'all before I book:

Would you deem it better to book the Vijaya through easytobook.com or through them directly? I ask because I contacted Vijaya directly and received a response saying they can accomadate my room preferences (window/canal view) where if I were to book with easytobook I don't know if I can request such a thing. Anyone ever booked with Vijaya directly and transferred credit card info and such?

All help is appreciated and hopefully I shall be booking within the next few hours.

"id buy the 78 Yugo"

You know I have a movie recommendation then. "Drowning Mona" with Danny DeVito.

The running gag throughout the movie is that Yugo was using that area to test the car and had given everyone in town a Yugo to drive. (based on a somewhat true event that Yugo part)

Nothing funnier than a town full of Yugo drivers

Booked at Vijaya.

I'm really not expecting much at all. As long as the sheets are clean and the shower/toilet work and are in my room I'm fine. I've stayed at far worse hotels here in New York so I have no problem "roughing it" for 4 days.

Plus, the discount at their Indian restaurant is a HUGE plus. Chicken Tikka Masala EVERY night!
