What area of the Dam do you prefer the most when you visit?
What area of the Dam do you prefer the most when you visit?
Finally have my vacation dates set for my first trip to the Dam, 10-24 May.
After many hours of researching apartments, I can't make up my mind in which area I'd like to base my operations out of.
I'm not there much at all for the tourist thing but rather hard drink (the desert tends to bring out the thirst in a man)
and heavy smoke. In everyone's past experiences, what area do you all find the most convenient to these needs? Thanks in advance!

The Rembrandtplein will supply you in drink, smoke, and lodgeing. Not the greatsest but conveinent. What kind of music do you like, that is one of the ways I pick a shop and that changes with the shift changes. Trip reports are a great way of picking and choseing. Amsterdam is a great walking city. Download a map from here and a copy (trust me you can loose the map). Have fun planing your trip.

First get to Centraal station get out of there very fast, turn right at the first corner straat (prins Hendrikkade)(if your on DAMRAK you didnt turn) cross the straat turn on Pannaalst till you see Nieuwendijk « this straat turn into Haarlemmerstraat and its most HIP straat in AMD! if you take Nieuw on the left side you ll ended at the Dam Square by taking Damstraart « this will bring you to the RLD
where youll find Many Bars Pubs and holes...

First timers get my S G Collins recommendation
I think a read of this will maximize your efficiency once you get there.
How not to get hit by a bike and other stuff they forgot to tell you about Amsterdam.
Enjoy

Maybe I should have elaborated a bit more. I'm definitely booking an apartment, what area has the most bars/coffeeshops per square km =)
I want to be able to walk out of my apt and walk back without having to go all over the city in case I find myself too inebriated. By the time I get to the Dam, it would have been 8 months without drink or smoke. It's not going to take much at all! I'm sure I'll be hitting a club here and there, but mainly CS's and bars.
I've been looking at the Nieuwe Zijde and Nieuwmarkt areas for accommodations. How are Jordaan, Vondelpark, and Haarem (sp) areas for nightlife?

How not to get hit by a bike
this document may be found in the excellent S G Collins website recommended by FlyByNite for first-time visitors to amsterdam
imho reading this document is the very most important preparation you can do to ensure your own safety in amsterdam traffic, because being hit by a bicycle could ruin your day ...
if you have already read the document, then thanks, but if not, then please please read before you arrive, and thanks
have a great trip ...
I booked this place, http://www.amsterdamstay.com/index.html ... p=2&pId=46 fairly reasonable. Located a stones throw away from Central Station. Argh! 3 more months!
Any biker bars in Amsterdam? lol
Thanks SS'67, I've indeed read that document. Very informative!
