Bit of weed brings fine

Suspicious activity in a grocery store parking lot led Sarnia police to a resident's marijuana.
William Rotteau-Taylor, 22, pleaded guilty to marijuana possession March 26, 2009 in Sarnia and was fined $300 in Sarnia court Thursday.
Sarnia police surveillance spotted two people hovering by a vehicle's trunk in a dark corner of the lot when other people went though a hole in a nearby fence.
The vehicle drove to a residence adjacent to the fence before being stopped because officers believed a drug deal was happening.
Rotteau-Taylor was a rear-seat passenger and told police he had a "bit of weed" in his pocket.
A bag containing 62.5 grams (2.2 ounces) was found that he said was for personal use.
Rotteau-Taylor was also placed on nine months probation when he must stay away from drugs and undergo a substance-abuse assessment.
Local Bust.

What can I say?
First, a bust of 62.5 grams (2.2 ounces) made the newspaper?..AND in Canada?..Talk about a slow newsday!
Second, you NEVER consent to a search without a search warrant.
AND
You NEVER admit to possession. Let them get a proper search warrant and do a proper legal search. If they find something, then you remain silent. Only talk when your lawyer has been consulted and has told you what to say.
If the cops don't have or won't get a warrant, then tell the cops that you are going on your way and that any further hassles will result in your lawyer getting involved. (Get names and badge numbers).
IMO, the really sad thing about this case, is that it obviously involves a very innocent kid, who had no clue about his rights, and he will have a criminal record (and becasue of it fairly limited career prospects) because of his ignorance.

You see that in the UK too. The cops will always try to get you to admit, otherwise they have to face the expense of having it analysed.
As above, NEVER admit you knowingly have an illegal substance. If you fancy a laugh, go through a load of meaningless slang term (like Chriss Morris in BrassEye). Chances are, if you had some soapbar on you, you are not in possession of an illegal substance anyway.
Another thing that bothers me, is that hash oil is a Class A drug. This makes no sense at all. Much 'polm' in this country is made from hash oil, so it is effectively a mixture of Class A and B drugs.

The alcohol analogy would be that beer and wine are class B drugs, but whisky would be a class A drug, simply becasue it has a higher alcohol concentration. Madness!
