Some tips:
Tobacco is not allowed
Generally, you will see signs on the door that state that tobacco is not allowed. if you inquire with the staff as to what kind of smoke is allowed, "pure" (100% weed) joints are allowed. For us here in the states, that means to blunt wraps but that's ok.
Smoking spliffs
If you still want to smoke spliffs, keep in mind that you can smoke anywhere outdoors in amsterdam; all you have to do is be mindful of those around you. Avoid smoking around kids and elderly (crowds or busy streets in general) and you're golden. Smoke your spliffs outside, take down some pure joints or bowls in the coffeeshops.
If you insist on smoking in coffeeshops, simply be smooth about it. Smoke further from the staff (just in case) and you might be ok due to the raw saturation of marijuan smoke in the room. Worth getting kicked out, though?
Enjoy your trip. I'm jealous, brother. 70 days to go

^^not great advice tbh.
No Tobacco Allowed signs do not mean there is no tobacco smoking going on in the shop. This is Amsterdam, the rules are different. Many shops have the signs to appease the laws but choose to allow tobacco if it is discreet. Pragmatism.
Also it is not totally ok to smoke "anywhere outdoors" in Amsterdam, in fact it is not allowed outside of coffeeshops. Parks are fair game but the streets is a grey area. Many people do smoke on the streets, you can smoke on the streets but it is not really allowed. True be discreet and you will likely have no problems but I have witnessed more than once the police moving tourists along for smoking or giving them a telling off; they will tell you it is only allowed in the coffeeshops. I mean its cool if you want to have a spliff out and about go ahead but be aware that its not legal, or approved of really. There have been discussions on this board about this, loads of tourists do smoke around the town, but many locals don't approve and would prefer you kept it in the designated areas. (there are also plenty of smoker friendly bars, so the choice is wide)
As for smoking further away from staff, not really necessary. If they have a smoking room sure its best to smoke in there but in the average tiny amsterdam coffeeshop there is no problem, hell the staff expect people to be smoking tobacco, albeit discreetly. If you are really unsure ask the staff, the odd dickhead in a tourist trap might tell ya no just cos you asked but mostly they'll just explain the keep it out of sight rule!
Keep tobacco out of sight and you'll be fine, the above post is out of whack with the reality of amsterdam. You're unlikely to get kicked out of anywhere.
The rare shop is totally tobacco free like Siberie for example but they wouldn't kick you out if you sparked a tobacco joint just ask you to go to the smoking room. The dutch are a cool and pragmatic people.

Let me offer the opportunity to justify my words.
First of all, never did I speak about the legality of smoking weed in this fine city. It is illegal; it's also illegal to smoke in coffee shops. If the term "tolerated" better suits you, then so be it. It is tolerated to smoke outdoors as long as it's not among crowds, children, elderly, etc. Yes, you're not "suppose" to and streets are grey area, but then again, so are coffee shops. Legally speaking, it is just as illegal to smoke outside as it is inside a cofeeshop.
Now if we're talking about day-to-day, and not laws, yes you can smoke outside. Is it frowned upon by locals? Yes, it can be. If you're smoking spliffs, where the smell is largely tobacco, will you get locals turning heads to give you a dirty eye if you're smoking secluded in a quiet canal or park? I've been 6 times and that's never happened, but I reserve the possibility that experience may vary from person to person.
Tobacco is NOT allowed. Keep in mind, in the scope of our discussion, I have had multiple experiences watching coffeeshop / brown cafe staff tell a patron they may NOT smoke tobacco under the penalty of being kicked out. I have never seen this happen to a pure-spliff smoker in a smoking bar. The rules, unfortunately, are not different. Although some places may "tolerate" (much like weed is tolerated), that is to the discretion of that establishment.
Out of wack? I'm not saying I disagree with your voice, all I'm saying is I believe what I've SEEN and when I've SEEN people get kicked out because of tobacco when the sign clearly reads "no tobacco". If anything, your advice is significantly more reckless than mine, but welcome to the interwebz.
The question here, what it really comes down to, is do you want to RISK being kicked out when you CANNOT be sure of what the shop staff will do?
To the original poster, you asked what can you mix weed with if not tobacco. Most establishments offer tobacco substitute for freely and readily available on tables and/or upon request.

Just to point out, if a place gets 'checked' they take a reading of the air content with a machine whether tobacco products are visible, or not. So don't be a smart arse and 'get away' with it, ALWAYS ASK THE STAFF. If the answer is no, then respect it, because even the odd 'dickhead' in a tourist trap is just trying to keep their job.

just before i went in december i was getting worried about the tobacco ban aswell as i always use cigarette in my spliff...However i didnt actually have any problem when i was out there. But i did always ask the staff if it was okay first...the general reaction in every place was that its fine but to put them away in a bag or pocket, not visible basically....but it really isnt a problem there
To drunkn munky,
When going into any C/S, ask the budtender if you may use tobacco as a filler. If you are told no, you know why (it's illegal). Don't be like some who would have a hissy fit and argue.
I'm love my bowl and vaporizer even more each time I read the woe-is-me about tobacco use in C/S's.
Peace.

thanks for all the pointers guys, landed back in blighty this afternoon after a great weekend. Well as far as i could see yes the signs are clearly up regarding the use of tobacco but the laws seem to be very relaxed, pretty much every coffee shop i went in i spotted someone smoking a cigge or rolling with tobacco.
Ive never smoked pure weed joints before, mainly because with the weed here in the uk ive found it harder to keep the thing alight the more weed i put in, different story with the weed in the dam and by the end of the first night it was pure weed all the way. The misses still liked it rolled with a little tobacco which no one took offence too so all was good.
Overall a top weekend
