indeed dave, some realism about the perceived dangers is all i wish to promote. and i don't think we should be taking our advice from youtube ladies....

greed capitalism monsanto whatever check - my comments these things do not concern, although there is probably some financial motive behind this youtube campaign but we can ignore that ;)

My opinion is that GM is risky, but can you tell me of any scientific advancement in the last 200 years that hasn't had some inherent risk involved with it. No doubt that GM has its downsides, but the upsides seem, for me anyway, too outweigh the negatives. Don't get me wrong there are some things that i will never buy GM ( for example I only ever buy organic Carrots). But the real Beneficiaries of this breakthrough are not going to be 'us' living in our 1st world countries with our disposable incomes, its going to be for the billions of people in the world that need to eat, and not decide what they want to eat if that makes any sense.

im against GM foods, i support prince Charles in keeping britain free of it, we in europe are in no stretch of the imagination starving to death, so the argument is weak, GM crops in US southern states have been known to destroy native corn crops in mexico, so im sceptical of how this can be a benefit to the worlds problems, its like the law which was introduced few years back saying all petrol sold must now contain a certain ammount of biofuels, supposedly to combat global warming, this has led to massive increases in food prices in the 3rd world, thus killing much more people than global warming ever has, my point is that just because people think theyr'e doing good (i mean the legislators not the companies behind these products) its actually possible theyr'e making matters worse
+ imo its just another way for multi national corporations to get more money out of the people
+ i might be completely wrong, but i seriously doubt marijuana seed producers have access to the equipment required to GM them, but is it not just crossing the plants over & over which makes these super strengh hybrids?

I think a few people are confused. Genetic modification is not the same thing as selective breeding, and I'm pretty sure there aren't any cannabis growers doing GM

Selective breeding is where you take a male and female plant that have the traits you want, put them together and let nature take its course. Yes, there is human intervention but you have no real control over the output, that is determined 100% by the genetics of the plants you happened to choose. This is what cannabis growers do, and what farmers have done for 1000s of years.

Genetic modification is where you "cut and paste" the DNA in a chemical/laboratory method, to create what are essentially frankenstein plants that could never possibly have evolved with selective breeding. This would be like putting seaweed DNA in cannabis because you want it to grow in salt water.

The main problem with GM is that its a purely commercial venture. The corporations are pushing it under the guise of 'easing global poverty' but its a complete and utter lie.

Heres the real reason behind GM, read it and think about the implications:

Genetically modified plants, unlike 'normal' plants, can be patented.

Having a patent on a plant might not seem like a big deal until you realise that GM is slowly taking over staple foods like wheat, rice, soy, corn etc. So wheat isn't just "wheat" anymore, its becoming "Wheat (TM)" and you have to pay someone if you want to grow it.

You might think "well the farmers can grow what they choose" but thats where things get uglier. Other genetic modifications are designed specifically to force the farmers to use GM seeds.

Companies like Monsato sell not just seeds, but pesticides. Their seeds are modified so they can survive their own brand pesticides (of course). But the pesticides are so toxic that nothing else can grow on the field afterwards. So the farmer is 'locked in' and the only way they can survive is to keep buying more Monsato seeds and pesticides every year.

They have also developed what are known as 'terminator' seeds. Its a genetic modification designed to prevent farmers from seed saving (ie. taking profits away). The seeds will always die after a set amount of time, so the farmer is forced to buy new seeds every season. This creates a situation where a large corporation has total control over the food supply because they are at the top of the chain with nobody to answer to except shareholders.

And this is only the tip of the iceberg.

Another big problem with GM/food industries, they are becoming a monoculture ie. everyone is growing the exact same breed of corn, potatos etc. all over the world, and all the sub-species are being lost. This leaves the food supply extremely vulnerable to disease, and is exactly what caused the great famine in Ireland. They were only growing 1 kind of potato, when a certain plant disease sprung up which destroyed that species of potato. After the famine was over, they decided they needed to grow many different kinds of potatos to spread the risk, and keep genetic diversity.

I don't know if there are health risks with GM food. But I don't need any more reasons than those I listed above.

bleak, I can tell you're passionate but just in case you didn't take a look at this link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7745726.stm I saw the tv show and it did make me rethink the whole GM debate.

No but there are a lot of cannabis breeders who are only releasing feminised seeds because they dont want the grower to make their own stock.

Thanks for the link... there are also benefits to GM, I'm not opposed to the technology itself. I'm only opposed to the way its being used by large corporations to maximize profits and eliminate competition in a deliberate, almost predatory manner.

Its WAY too powerful and important to be in the hands of groups like Monsato.

Usually I never enter these sorts of discussions on forums, about controversial issues and the like.

But lately I've been reading up on the food industry and what I found really surprised me, to the point that I had to bring it up with my partner, close friends etc.

We can't have a discussion about GM without mentioning Codex Alimentarius. If you haven't heard about it you might be surprised.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codex_Alimentarius
official site: http://www.codexalimentarius.net/

Unfortunately there is lots of misinformation on the web about Codex being a conspiracy theory etc. Here is a website which has a thorough and balanced explanation of Codex, including some of the untruths floating around.

http://www.anhcampaign.org/campaigns/codex

Its a worldwide food standards code. Countries that don't 'harmonise' with the code will face sanctions and lose the right to trade food internationally.

The code is heavily biased towards large-scale industrial agriculture. It favors GM farming, and also degrades the standards for organic/bio.

The code also standardizes the acceptable amounts of contaminants, additives, pesticide residues etc at current day levels.
