My understanding is that the renovation won't be fully completed until the first half of 2013. While there is still a lot to see I don't don't know that it's worth it to pay the full admission price.

There is a branch of the Rijksmuseum at Schiphol Airport that I'm pretty sure is free. Obviously it's not the same as going to the Rijksmuseum itself, but it's still pretty good I understand.

Well, it's 3 years behind schedule because of what it was supposed to cost and what it's going to cost! The company that won the bid said it was going to cost 134 million euros, but then said it would really cost 222 million euros.

I found the Rijkes ok - despite the temp nature of it. The VanGogh is kickass. Try Friday nights for music & beer. Nice place for a party.

The Rjkes during renovation is absolutely not worth the admission price. It is a shame to have to wait so long to visit what promises to be a great museum. It is a real minus on the city to have such a poor excuse for a museum for so long. The Van Gogh is far better value all round at the moment. Never thought I'd say that as it is quite expensive in it's own right.

Yeah, think I'll skip the Rijksmuseum this time. Van Gogh museum I didn't find that exciting, never much a fan of his style; prefer the Dutch masters. Unfortunately, the Scheepvaartmuseum is under renovation too.

At least it will give me a chance to visit some of the museums I haven't been to like the Tropenmuseum, Verzetsmuseum, Multatuli Museum, et al. Plan on hitting up the Frans Hal Museum in Haarlem as well.

When did it start? It's been going on since I was first there in '06. Jeez, they could have built a brand new one by now. 2013????? I should live so long.

Toke on!

From what I gathered, they're way behind schedule. After they got an estimate from the firm that was going to do the remodel and it was considerably higher than expected, they had to put it up for rebid, so that process takes a while. Plus, I'm sure it is political in the sense that the government has to approve bids, etc. It is the state museum after all so that could be part of it.

I think the Van Gogh museum finally put me right off Van Gogh. Though they also had work from John Everett Millais in another part which made up for it. In the Rijks there was a painting of an old woman and just the frilly collar on another painting made it worth the money....and I'm not that big into art.

I really enjoyed the Rijks - having said that the missus paid me in so I can't remember how much it cost :-)

...and then over the road to the Bols Museum :-)
