..thanks for sharing that...i lived/worked in Kuala Lumpur for several years and when I arrived I was having to buy rattan straw wraps (enough for one spliff each) from dodgy street corners which was painful as id get through loads in a week, but by the end I had got myself very organised and had my own direct line of supply straight from the thai border, i used to see some righteous fresh fruity semi-compacted buds coming in each month, I even went to a malay wedding in Kuala Terranganu and had 'Nasi Ganja' once (old malay wedding custom, rice and finely chopped herb served to the whole village (adults only)). That was a hoot. Its got a bit more orthordox since I was there by all accounts so unsure how much of the old ganja culture remains there now..
Have you been to the north? Is Chang Mai still nuts?
The best weed that I got when I lived there actually used to come from the little island of Aachi (Indonesia), their stuff rocked and apparently the isalnd was famous throughout the region for good herb. They had a political rebellion and then a Tsunami so that dried up for a year or two though, very inconvenient

I'd be very careful when in Malaysia / Indonesia / Thailand with regards to weed. The laws are very strict and over the top.

That is true, death penalty for 'trafficking', and often the thai police like to make examples of westerners, and also try to extort a lot of money from you as well. In reality its everywhere in the cities and countryside, it exists throughout their society and has done for hundreds of years, BUT kkchrome is absolutely right, you have to use your common sense all the time and be prepared to lose a lot of money at best if you ever get caught.. the worst case is you get to spend a very long time in a horrid wretched prison so yes pls be very careful..dont even think of scoring on Bali by the way, it was the only country that is a real no-no in my opinion..I was living there and knew what was what, its less obvious if you are just travelling. Pakistan was also very very scary, I knew two lots of friends that were framed crossing the border, in both cases they were 100% innocent and had a lot of problems getting free...beware..

As I have family in Bangkok, I typically visit them once a year. One of the most common scams is for a tout to walk down a street frequented by tourists, holding up a pack of Marlboros in plain sight, and whispering, "Ganja, ganja." Woe betide the poor farang who buys. Once the deal's done, the tout vanishes, and suddenly the boys in brown (Thai police) appear. The tourist is dragged off and usually shaken down somewhere for upwards of 30,000 Baht. No doubt, the tout gets a cut of this. The moral of the story is, buy from someone you know and trust! An even better lesson is, don't do drugs in Asia. They do NOT f*ck around there and will happily victimize you if you allow them.

I haven't been to Thailand but, really wanted to recently and did a lot of research and found the same info as the above are stating. I found so much crazy shit that I'm not even going there unless my system is clean. Yeah, it's like that over there. The police will randomly bust nightclubs and drug test people (mostly for yaba for what I hear) for drugs and if you have anything in your system they'll take you in or extort you for cash if you're farang.
Also in response to the above post about having a deal done and the tout vanishes and suddenly the boys in brown appear is since the person that narcs you out can get paid for turning you in.

I was actually busted once in my time working in SE Asia, the chinese dude that used to sell decent Indonesian grown herb to me in Chinatown in Kuala Lumpur gave a funny nod one day when I took it from him whilst in my car, next thing Im being followed by a malay guy on a motorbike, I threw the packets out the window on the first bend i came to, out of sight of man on bike, then when I stopped at the next set of lights he pulled my passenger door open and thrust a gun and a badge at me, and the short version is he took us to a quiet dark cul de sac and demanded my car, my malaysian girlfriend (and he was quite serious about her, it wasnt a joke) and my watch and 200 dollars or he would take me to the police station for a urine test etc...after much haggling which was quite frankly very scary given his gun etc, we settled on my watch and my sunglasses (fake designer thank god) and equivalent to about £20, kept my car and my girlfriend (!)...moral of this story is sooner or later even when you 'know the score' things can go very wrong very quickly, so if in doubt do not buy...and even then be very very careful...thai police are very hot on westerners on the main islands like Ko Phangan (the full moon party island) and Ko Samui, been searched on the beach several times by plain clothes, so be extra vigilant on the islands, hide your stash in the sand away from your hut at night etc..
