Tentative Plans for the De Pijp crawl.4/22/2010

Post by Twichaldinho »

Alrighty then folks. Lets put the wheels in motion.
As has been stated, a coffeshop crawl through De Pijp, on April the 22nd , while there are still a few of us in town seems doable. Epic even!
So lets plan this shit!

I suggested an early start, to accommodate the members who have flights home that day. I also suggested that we start the whole thing in Mellow Yellow since I know for a fact it opens at 9 AM. That’s as far as I got.
Until now.
I had a little look through the Directory, and it looks like De Graal, is the next shop open. Their page states that it opens at 10 AM . Can anyone confirm this?
The next place, whose opening time I know for sure, is Katsu. They open at 11AM. By the time were done smoking up there, I’d imagine everywhere else will be open . Also, Katsu is smack in the middle, meaning we can grab a munch, lunch whatever, and if the weather allows, munch up in Sarphatipark. Then pick a direction. I tentatively suggest heading off to Media, or Papillion. Both are large enough to accommodate us, and I’m thinking either would be a great place for a Second meeting point, for any late risers who wish to join us. From there, we go to the other one ( Papillion/Media)
So what do we have ?

9ishAM - Meet at Mellow Yellow, a few doobs, gather the troops.

10ishAM, - depart Mellow Yellow, head south to De Graal, set up camp in them comfy ass couches, smoke some nice hash, dare I say it, chat?

Anytime after 11AM - head back off to centralize ourselves, maybe brows the market en route to Katsu, smoke some Verdampers, have a brew or two, again, maybe a convo. :D

Grab some munch, I cant really suggest a time here, but I would like to be kinda specific with what time we make the next shop at, for others to catch us up. So with that in Mind, I say…

Media/Papillion - 1: 30PM, gather the troops, smoke more pot. Then, we go to the other ( Media/Papillion )

Upon exiting, we just randomly decide, left or right. :?

One direction gives us Yoyo, Carmona, Ibiza, De Keeper, D&L, and maybe a few I don’t know. The other direction gives us Kabouter, Pacific, and probably more I don’t know.

As you can see, I have left a lot of decisions to be made on the day, because I do not want to be the boss of this whole thing. Spur of the moment decision making should govern this trip, and the timescale could change on a whim. But I’m putting it out there to get the ball rolling.

A question I have, is does any one have any Knowledge of good places where we can munch up, while shop-hopping. I recall LiquidSwords, and his crew munching up somewhere in his Last Trip Report. Would this place be any good for us Liquid?

I welcome all comments, criticisms, and general Feedback. If you feel anything is unachievable, or should be changed, let it be known. Fun is the only objective here.

Looking good boss

No need to worry about chat either, as i'm sure i will bore your tits off after a few morning smokes  it's the late nights when the cannabis affects my facial muscles and ability to talk.

The schedule sounds good to me, i have to say im almost ashamed of only being into the Kabouter and Katsu coffeeshops down south, so i am very easy going and up for seeing any and as many as new places that can be comfortably fit in. The 1:30 time is a good one for the later starters i think also, and gives the morning crew time for some lunch.
Again i am good wherever people want to eat (you can see i am going to be a lot of help deciding things!!), as if it is a nice day then i would be happy getting something on the go and stopping in the park....otherwise if we need shelter then anywhere local that people know of will be just as enjoyable.

Can't wait to try the verdamper either :!:

Twitch this is looking a rather good day, the 9am ish start at M/Yellow is a good point to start at for us early rising smokers, as For the De graal im unsure of the opening time there, only one way to fing out if needed,we can have a stroll on over and see.

Media or Papillion for the around lunch are both good choices for the fellow acd'ers to catch up with us here, and like Valo says we could get some munchies before here to.

As for my conversation after a few Verdampers, it may have stalled a little by then, but you never know i may amaze myself and have one of those second wims.

After that i expect it will be time for myself to take a slow stroll back to the station

Count us in , make the most of our last day with some fellow ACD tokers.

Hey Twichaldinho,

There's a snowball's chance in hell that I'd be in AMS for 4/20 but there is a chance... Anyway, I have a few food recos for de Pijp if that helps you guys.

Since I try to keep it on the cheap, my fave option is to hit up the fishmonger's just a few stores up from Katsu and order 100 grams each of fried mussels, fried cod, raw herrring, or whatever else seems good. Like all Dutch merchants, this place is spotless and gleaming, the seafood pristine and beautifully displayed. Typically, a 100 grams of most items will run you 2-3 euros which you can take outside in little cardboard boxes and enjoy on the terras. There's also a frites shop across the street if one wishes to improvise an order of fish and chips. A lot of these fishmongers will also make up fried cod (kibbeling), herring (haring), or krabsalade sandwiches, but I never asked here.

By the way, I usually bring my little heap of fried mussels, cod, and herring into Katsu (since Illa said I could) to enjoy prior to a bowl of some Crystal Clear laden weed, but I'm not sure if they'd appreciate a large group doing the same all at once. Right on the corner from Katsu is Toko Tjin which is my second budget-friendly option. For the uninitiated, tokos are Surinamese/Indonesian stores that dot the Netherlands. They're either grocery stores that sell some prepared foods, or delicatessens that sell some grocery items (I'm not sure which) but Toko Tjin has noodles and rice that you can take out for less than it costs eating in a restaurant. You can call ahead and place an order if you wish. Here's their menu.

For those of you addicted to Burger Bar, there is another well-liked Amsterdam burger concept resto, Burgermeester on Albert Cuypstraat. In addition to beef, they sell pumpkin/portabello burgers, lamb burgers, tuna burgers, turkey burgers, etc. You can check out their menu on their website. No frites though which is kind of annoying. I hadda lamb burger which I was a little underwhelmed with but would definitely go back to check out some of the other items.

For dessert, you have a couple of respectable options, Across the street from Burgermeester is Bakken met Passie, a highly regarded bakery which has won several international baking competitions. A little pricey but you can bet the croissants and pastry are first rate. There is also a really cool whimsical bakery specializing in fancy layer cakes which has to be seen to be believed. It's called De taart van mijn tante (My Aunt's Cake in English) and markets itself as a 'cake parlor.' The interior is meant to resemble a sitting room complete with piano though the decor struck me as a cross between 18th century brothel and Barbie's Malibu Beach House. It's just dripping with kitsch. Cake and tea are the order here. For ice cream, you can go to Ijscypje which is down the street from both Club Media and Katsu!

As for watering holes in de Pijp, my favorite spot is Cafe Krull which fronts Sarphatipark. It's quite simply a neighborhood bar that fills up with families on weekends, complete with ramshackle homemade furniture and a sidewalk terras. Airy and unpretentious, it's the only bar I remember seeing Guinness on tap which is what drew me in the first place. Perfect spot for a libation in the setting sun.

There are also 2 other bars that I've read about and walked past countless times without going in. First, there is a branch of the well-respected Cafe Gollem here, around the corner from Media. It styles itself more as a gastropub and is probably more suited for dinner along with the array of beers and liquors that Gollem is famous for. Also on my to-do list is Cafe Gambrinus which was recently voted for having the best tostis in Amsterdam by Expactica. Apart from that, it is a handsome bruin cafe down the block from Papillon where they serve Affligem Blond according to my notes.

Valo, thats the feedback I was after, cheers.

STENMAN, remember, early bird, gets the bong  also, if there is any shops we pass, and you want to stop in, as yer time is limited, i'm sure we can shoehorn em in!

Titus, WOW, exactly the kind of thing I hoped would be posted. There are plenty options there for us crawlers. If a couple o them piggies fly over yer house, and you do make it over for 420, I'll pack your pipe with the finest of herbs. Cheers.

Toker70, me too. I'm all excited, like a child

Edit

I've ate from here before  . This is the place where Milehigh and I stopped for a Chicken sandwich, when I was on my Ganjatour. We sat right on that bench!

Sounds good to me, hopefully I will make the early start and hopefully its nice weather like last year. Chillin in the park is ideal then.

Long days toking in Amsterdam is my Norm ( as it seems to be for alot o us ), but I appreciate your concern mate
Also, with there being a slight timescale, people who cant get up early, have a great chance of knowing where the group will be, at least up till about 2PM.

A chicken sandwich (broodje kip) from Tijn's is one of Amsterdam's best kept secrets. They are unbelievably tasty, especially with the hot sauce.
I first came across Tijn's about 12 years ago. I was just passing by what looks like just an ordinary corner grocery shop but noticed the queue so thought I would give it a try. There have all different fillings but went for the chicken and from the first bite I was hooked.
I took my mate there for the first time last October and he ranked his sandwich as the best thing he ate on his whole trip and we did a lot of eating while we were there. We're back in town next month and he's already made me promise to take him to Tijn's again.
