Right now, call a friend who can get you some weed, preferably mild. In the comfort of your own home, try a little and see if you even like it. Ask a friend to be there with you, maybe even smoke some with you. Ask your friend to take note of your behavior. I always thought that experimenting or starting out with any type of drug (including alcohol), should be done at home or somewhere familiar like a m8s flat or a cool uncle's place. I have personally witnessed first timers freaking out in a C/S, and it's not a pretty sight. C/S workers know exactly what I am talking about. Oh the drama. ''
If you smoked too much of some potent gear, better hold on boo boo. If it's creeper weed, you won't even know what hit you. ''
Your choice.

thats some pretty sane advice there ^^^

I screwed it up. I was referencing Yogi Bear (cartoon character). If you've ever seen the cartoon, you will understand the reference. If not, and for those who haven't, I recommend watching while high. Some funny shit.
Peace.

That's a great cartoon.

There's also a classic cheech & chong line:

Cheers for the fresh advice itt.

I would almost certainly try it here before I went if I knew someone who smokes. Unfortunately for me I don't, plain and simple.

I'm not a regular smoker unfortunately  , so when I go to Amsterdam, I always start of with some light maroccan hash and build up from there.

I like to smoke a lot of spliffs when there, so I don't go for one hit weeds or strong iceolators etc - they are also way too expensive.

It's amazing how quickly tolerance builds up though :D

Hey rothbury,

Have you locked down an apartment/hotel yet? That info would help in making a specific venue reco.

Haven't booked anything yet. Long story short I had to have some immediate work done on my teeth and I'm booked in to see a specialist on the 22nd. So can't book anything until then. Basically my amsterdam trip has been bumped back a few weeks :(

But what areas would you suggest? I'm looking for a place for 2k-2.5k per month. If you can suggest a place that would be cool.

If I were u and planning on a month-long stay during the summer, I would monitor the Amsterdam edition of Craigslist. Plenty of Amsterdammers head south for the summer holiday and sublet their places.

As an example, I randomly pulled this ad for a studio in de Jordaan that's going for 1050 for the month of June. Be advised that a lot of these places disallow smoking on premises, so look for a balcony, private garden, etc. Also, it is still relatively early in the season for these sublet offers to appear -- you may have better luck if you wait a few weeks as people firm up their vacation plans.

As for specific neighborhoods, I've always had a soft spot for de Pijp. It's far enough from the centrum so that it largely tourist free and has none of the seediness associated with hordes of drunken hooligans tromping through the RLD. Plus, a wonderful open air market open during the week guarantees that you'll never want for quality produce and foodstuffs on a street lined with numerous ethnic restaurants.

Since you are a first time visitor though, I would personally jump at any place in de Jordaan. It has the most picturesque setting by far and is studded with dozens of historic, beautiful cafes and coffeeshops. If you're craving romantic, picture postcard ambiance, then de Jordaan wins hands down.

Thanks for the tips, de Jordaan sounds very nice. Do you have a recommendation for sites to look at for apartments in that area? Most of the sites so far I'm not sure if they are totally legit. For example some of them are listed as 1 BR 1 bathroom for say 1k, then you click the link and its 2 BR 1 bathroom for 2k.

That was one of the ones I was not so sure of :/

I'm looking on craigslist atm. For example this one

http://amsterdam.craigslist.org/apa/1696282160.html

Has price listed at 1550 and an agency fee of 1550. Is that agency fee on top of the price for the month?

Yeah I think it's normal practise for an agency to charge 1 months rent as a deposit.

That makes sense, though why they would call it a "fee" is beyond me. That language makes it sound like you're paying twice

In that particular listing you are looking at a normal 12 month rental. Check out 'sublets / temporary,' and 'vacation rentals.' What r u smoking, man? Oh that's right -- nothing yet.

Here's another random pick in de Jordaan going for 1490 (per mo.?) for July.

CityMundo is well-known and I've rented from them with no probs. I rather doubt they have anything available for a month-long stay since they are so popular.
