Lots of places to rent per night listed on craigslist and expatriates. Much nicer than a hotel room. Just beware of the weirdo scammers!

Just stayed in the Krasnapolsky on Dam Square, really nice, specially for the price we got, a bit posh though. We dreaded having to speak to the night porter when we staggered in at 3am.

NH Barbizon - Very smoke friendly, stayed there twice.
Avenue - Smallish rooms, but nice and clean. Close enough to action, but on a very quiet street.

Me and my mate stayed at hotel 83 last time we went, first time i had used it, found it to be awesome, large room and ensuite bathroom, very clean, right in the heart of the RLD! Around the corner of the greenplace coffeeshop, and only 3 or 4 doors from cafe remember

Yes. Asked the dude when we arrived, it was fine if we smoked with the window open and with my arms hanging outside. Was'nt a problem as in the room was two chairs and a table, so i pulled one upto the window and sparked up. Prices for 4 nights was 240euros per person mid march, saturday till wednesday

Its cool if you like the location etc but why spend more than an apartment costs on a hotel room, and why hang out of a hotel window in the middle of winter when for less money you can be sitting in a comfy sofa next to your mates/missus chuffing in your own lounge all day and night if you want....for me its no contest nowadays, its apartments all the way (plus you can make toast at 3 in the morning if you want to).. :D :D
