Maybe this post is for the older traveler who cannot really take a day and night regimen of the RLD and the CS's. I have, however, smoked plenty in all these hotels. I just do it discreetly, masking the smell with, candles, cigarette smoke, open windows, bathroom exhaust fans, and plenty of discretion. When you go out for the day, put your stuff away, clean up, and leave a euro or two for the cleaners.

Though it is not a place for those with a limited pot of money for the trip, The Park, on the Stadhouderskade (by the Vondel Park), is quite nice. Good rooms, great breakfast. It's mid-way between Leidseplein and the Museumplein. If I didn't head to Leidseplein, I'd go to Tweedy on Vondelstraat.

The Sint Nicolaas, located right where the NZV and Spuistraat diverge is also a pretty decent stay for the money. It's not as cheap as it used to be, but it's comfortable, clean and convenient. It's about 5 minutes old guy walk to the 420, and there's a shop right across the street (it used to be the Pool Dog).

The Citadel and Avenue are sister hotels right along the NZV. The Citadel is 2 minutes from the Kuil, the Avenue is 5 minutes away. Both are modern, clean, comfortable, and reasonably priced if not exactly cheap.

The Terminus was OK so far as the room and breakfast were concerned. The staff, however, seems to have spent too much time dealing with partiers, or something. The desk folk were pretty snotty and unhelpful. Try to get a room to the front of the place. If you're at the back, the noise from the RLD will ruin your sleep.

The Albus Grand on the Vijzelstraat is another pricey place. I stayed there on a free upgrade on a package deal. Nice room, good staff, great breakfast. It's only a couple blocks to Mellow Yellow. It's close to the Rokerij, but I don't patronize that place.

I now stay in Bed and Breakfast places I find through Trip Advisor.

Enjoy Amsterdam where ever you might stay.

Have stayed in a variety of places in the dam with a variety of results.

Hotel Linda - just don't do it. Worst hotel experience ever in the dam. COLD! Threadbare carpet, basement room resembled more of a dungeon. So only if you like that kind of thing! Inadequate shared facilities and noisy to boot. Not cheap enough or in a good enough location to be worth it. Way off Liedsplien.

Hotel Mulitali - overpriced nonsense. Near to the station and several coffeeshops on prince hendrick st though.

Hotel Krasnapolsky - Got a 'deal' to stay here. room was crap. Had a big structural support beam right in the middle of it and not in a good way! Staff were way too good to help scum like their customers and everything they could get away with was extra. Never again.

Hotel Gerstekorrel on damstraet - lots of fun if you like sleeping in a coffin. Not the worst by a long way tho. Cheap.

Hotel Damrak on Damrak - there appear to be 2 of these near to each other with same name. The one I stayed at was adequate with a free breakfast. All for about 50 eu.

Hotel Torrenzicht - v smoker friendly with a bar downstairs open to all hours. The toilet facilities are a joke. Right in the middle of the wallen on one of the canals. Standard RLD rip off basically.

Hotel Luxer Warmosstraat - Near the top end so close to the station. Has it's own bar downstairs and for it's location it is remarkably quiet. Smoker friendly. They just assume you will smoke and ask you to open a window when you check in. Has it's own secure alley for bike parking. Lift. 50-60 euro range. The room I got last time was really nice. Going again to see if good experience is repeated.

2000 Houseboat behind Olympic Stadium 14 days.
2004 Aadam Hotel Wilhelmina(sp?) in apartment 7 days.
2005 Sativa room C in Haarlem 10 days.
2006 Sativa in Haarlem room A 12 days.
2006 NH Zandvoort in Zandvoort 2 days.
2007 Sativa in Haarlem room A 10 days.
2009 Hotel Abba 5 days.
2009 Amsterdam Bos Campground in a 2 preson cabin 5 days.
I have been lucky and every place I have stayed I really enjoyed. The best was the Sativa in Haarlem by far. They had nice clean rooms for a cheap price. If you were lucky and stayed in room A you also had a fridge in the room. I really miss that place and the great coffee shop below is also gone. OK it is still open but before it had my vote as the best shop in the Netherlands and now it sucks so bad I could not even bring myself to stop in there om my last trip. The stupid smoking band killed this shop.

Hi Adamster I rented a bike and got a map from the office. Ok I had 3 different bikes the first one broke at the other end of the park right in front of where they do the boat racing. Luckily my friend towed me all the way back to the campgrounds. The second bike had a flat when I went to get it out of the rack so I fould a good bike in the rack and gave the guy that # and then had a good bike the rest of my stay. The 2 person cabin was 25euro a day or 30 with heat, after first night we went for the 30(15each) with heat. I also really loved this campground/park rode bikes all over the place tripping on shrooms and smokin joints. I did not mind it being away from the city center as I try to avoid it most of the time.
