I randomly chose the Kap my first stay and have never tried any others. It's real quiet- I sleep like a baby there. It's a 2 star with a killer included breakfast bufett where a single is about EUR 45 off season and 55 high season.

Jole, not sure if you've gone yet but don't worry about the Bulldog hotel, I really like it there. Their coffeeshops suck, but the hotel's fine, really clean, smoking bar/lounge downstairs, nice roof terrace and 24 hour staff to point you in the right direction to anywhere, you'll have a blast :)

I stayed at the Ramada this time.

For the price it was the best 3 star I've statyed in... food excellent... room on the small side but adequate.

Strange glass bathroom walls...... glad I was there with the Mrs!

Ive stayed at an apartment in west amsterdam that had everything youd need for a week + stay. 450 euros for 8 nights, Dude was great too, picked us up from central statoin and took us back when we left. Not the best location but i enjoyed the walks. Will be staying at one of his more centrally located apts in Jan. http://home.hetnet.nl/~paul131200/index.html

This year I have stayed at:

NH Caransa - (won on priceline for £43/night, twin room) - very comfortable, great location (Rembrandtplein), noisy building works taking place when we were there so after 1 night we were moved across the square to...

NH Schiller - beautiful hotel with olde worlde charm rather than all mod cons. I loved being based in this area of town. And having Stix 1 just around the corner is a real bonus.

Amsterdam Marriott - another priceline win for the same trip, 4* hotel in Amsterdam for £50 a night can't be sniffed at. Great location for museums and Leidseplein.

Cornerhouse Cafe - very central location on the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, reasonable price, friendly, basic rooms above a lively brown bar.

Hotel Belga - my joint favourite along with the NH Schiller. Clean but very basic rooms, wonderful location on a very pretty street round the corner from Dam square. Single room with shared facilities was £30 per night which included a decent breakfast.

I had no problems smoking the odd spliff with the window open at any of the above but hard core smokers would probably feel most comfortable at the Cornerhouse.

Ive stayed at the Hotel Vijaya, Slap bang in amongst it all, the RLD etc and c/shops. Run by some polite Indians, reasonable rates (40-50eoros pppn) You can smoke till your hearts content. Never had anything stolen plus they have a safe you can put things in, again ive used this service each time ive stayed and had no worries, Killer stairs as someone mentioned. And a bit noisy apparentley, although i never found it that bad. bed at 2am up at 8am. Happy daze

Did you see this thread? https://www.coffeeshopdirect.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2362

It's OK, if you're not too fussy it's quite a laugh. I prefer the Winston for a cheapy, and a lot of people seem to rate the Crown. Welcome along J'Burg BTW, good to have someone from your part of the world here. Do you speak Afrikaans? A friend of mine could understand Dutch pretty well from speaking it.

Oh there was a topic on the Flying Pig... sorry about that !! I tried to find it

Hey T.G, thanks for the info. Yeh, i went onto the Flying Pig website and it looks pretty chilled, i dont mind "roughing" it for a few days. Is there a website for the Winston and the Crown?

Thanks for the welcoming. Yeh, i speak Afrikaans. I have used it on a few Dutch people i work with, Afrikaans seems like a very basic form of Dutch.....its good to know that i might be able to understand a few things !!
