Where did you stay in Amsterdam???
Here you go http://www.hotelthecrown.com/ Never stayed there myself, but it gets good reports.

If you stay at the Winston, the back part is quieter, and you get a good view of the RLD. Finally one to avoid: Continental on Damrak is about the same price as those two but is a total shithole. I had mice in my room, not just one either!

Very nice and clean with all the things that you would require, shower, washing machine, dishwasher etc all the appliances that you would need if you were to stay there for a few weeks! The guy came and met us at the victoria hotel and walked us to our apartment once inside gave us a nice big bag of weed to say welcome to the dam!!!!Sweet!Prices wenrt to bad think they were 40euros a night per person. We are booked to go back on the 11/4 to the 15/4 and are booked in the same apartment as before!Counting down the days till we go!

Amsterdam hotels
I've stayed the last three times at Stay Okay Vondelpark and it's a great hostel. Clean rooms and good service.
The only problem is that it's not 420 friendly. Previously I've just got stoned at a coffeeshop and then come back to the hostel and used the facilities like tv, internet and restaurant. Or got stoned in Vondelpark and then come back to sleep.
But there is something to be said for being able to smoke in your own room- specially if it's the first one after a while. Last time I nearly whitied at De Rokerij and then I had to find my way back to the hostel and climb all those stairs. I would have preferred to take my "first" toke in my room so I could whity in private.
So this time I'm thinking of booking a room at Hotel Princess on Overtoom, which is very near to Hotel Abba but not as expensive. But with free breakfast and good reviews.

It's been a long, long, long time.

we also stopped at the kooyk.
we got to amsterdam and the coach dropped us outside the hotel.
we literally just threw our bags in the room and took off to the nearest coffeeshop. We ended up miles away from hotel and no one could even remember what it was called.
Had to phone home and find out off the travel agent what it was called.
couldnt smoke here when i was there. he stessed that on check in.
I been to amstersdam 7 times and stopped in the green house effect 6 times. its perfick

The Frisco Inn on Buerrstraat
Just got back on Friday 6th april 2007 from this little gem of a budget hotel on the edge of the RLD (turn right at Grasshopper 2 and it is 3rd building on the left hand side with the blue sun-awning).
When we arrived we went into to the hotel bar to check in where we were met by extremely friendly bar staff who procesed our booking quickly and hassle free, eqipped us with our room keys and sent us on our way to our room.
The twin room on the 1st floor was exactly what we required as a base camp for our 60 hour assault on Amsterdam that was to follow. After venturing up the extremely steep stairs we came to our room (no.6) and on arrival we were pleased with our accomodation as it had 2 clean beds ample storage and private toilet and shower the room also had a free to use electronic room safe (not bad for 35Eu each per night). The bar at the hotel is smoker friendly and stays open until about 00.30 or 01.00 and never gets too busy. They have a pool table and as they use the internet to download the music they play through the sound system whatever kind of vibe you like they will probably be able to put it on for you.
Breakfast wasn't included in the price of our room but to be honest that doesn't matter to me as i like to try different places for a munch when away, you can purchase your breakfast in the bar if you want to but we opted to go around to The Hotel Old Quarter for our morning munch as it was right down the street from The Coin Coffeeshop (well worth a visit) and as soon as breakfast was despatched it was off into the Coin to start our day.
All in all i would recommend The Frisco Inn to anybody looking for a budget hotel near the RLD area of the Dam with clean rooms and excellent staff (and a cat that just lies about the bar all day getting ripped from all the fumes ). if you are going to use this hotel try to book in advance as they were turning lots of people away who were turning up looking for accomodation.

Don't stay at the Swissotel if you smoke weed
We stayed at the Swissotel - great locations, terrific rooms, and...an archaic cannabis clause - no weed on the premises. Well, I never smoked in the room, in every nearby coffeeshop and in tons of abandoned alleys - when you need a joint at 3...you go where you must. Nice hotel otherwise.

On my previous two trips, I have stayed at Hotel Rembrandtplein.
Its fairly small, only 2* or so, no lift, but its cheap!
My mates and I have always stayed in the 4 bed en-suite which was superb, very spacious, sky TV, fridge, plus brilliant views out on to a canal on a calm, resedential street.
Its on one of the two islands just east of Basjoe on the map,
Sweet location!! I've stayed right by the Leidseplein before, but unless you've got earplugs you're gonna be kept up all night by the bars, clubs, trams, punters etc.!
So to any younger travellers going to Amsterdam with a couple of mates I'd definitley recommend Rembrandtplein hotel, the 4 bed rooms work out at £25 per night
P.S. The standard single/twin rooms aren't anything to shout about plus the buffet breakfast was 6 Euro and we'd always wake up to late for it anyway, plenty of bakerys just round the corner!
Booked using hostelbookers.com by the way.

Hotel Belga
If you're looking for a clean, family-friendly budget hotel in an excellent location, I can highly recommend the Hotel Belga on Hartenstraat. It's a family business in the beautiful Nine Streets area, surrounded by wonderful little boutiquey shops and cafes, two minutes walk from Dam Square or the Anne Frank House, 10 minutes from Centraal Station.
You can get double, single or triple rooms, some with en suite showers, others with communal ones. Prices start at around 30E per night for a single with shared bathroom in off peak time. Breakfast is included - a continental buffet served in the cafe, which also does great sandwiches at lunchtime (and hotel residents get 10% off).
The rooms are basic but clean, but if you're the sort of person who needs ultra modern conveniences or can't handle the odd stain or burn on the carpet or bedspread it may not be your kind of place. Another possible downside if you are a light sleeper is the bells from the Westerkerk - the very same bells Anne Frank used to hear from their Annexe. Last week our room was facing into a courtyard so we could hardly hear them but my parents were up on the second floor and they were woken every fifteen minutes.
I've stayed there three times in the last year and have seen a mixture of people there, including English and Dutch families and pensioners, back packers and couples of all ages. It's a short walk to a couple of great coffee shops including Abraxas, Amnesia and Grey Area. Smoking in the hotel is not forbidden - I must admit I haven't asked permission but there are ashtrays in all the rooms and often a faint whiff of spliff in the corridors. Having said that, one of the owners told me she hates drugs and she often turns groups of lads away if they look like they may get boozed & drugged up and trash the place.
