I have to say I tend to stay at the Bulldog Hotel. Well it's cheap and chearfull and very clean in my oninion. Plus it does have a large bar where you can smoke your gear 24/7. I'd go as far as to say it's the best place you could get for your money if you dont mind sharing in a dorm that is.
There private rooms are a little over the odds compared to what you pay elsewere. But they are certainly clean and of better standard than many hotels out there of similar prices or more.
As I'm going on my own this oct\nov I will likely be it in the dorm in the Bulldog again to save me a fair bit of Euros for the finer things that Amsterdam has to offer.

I've stayed at Crowne Plaza - no problem smoking on smoking floors, not keen for it on the non smoking floors.
Has anyone ever stayed at either Atlantic Hotel near Den Haag, or Ibis at Scheveningen? How cool are they about smoking? Also it will be after July so the new laws may have come in.
Any info from Crowne Plaza how they will handle the smoking ban?

I've checked countless 4 and 5 star hotels in and around Dam Square and cannot find one that will be allowing smoking from next month. Perhaps the 1 and 2 star hotels are not so strict ??puffthemagicdragon wrote:I've stayed at Crowne Plaza - no problem smoking on smoking floors, not keen for it on the non smoking floors.

I stayed here http://www.amsterdamstay.com/Amsterdam_ ... tment.html , it was situated perfectly, the first floor above rock planet beside ricks cafe. 10/10 for location.
I have stayed at Hotel Abba 3 times. It is very good for the price. The people are very helpful (one person that works there is Welsh). The rooms are a fair size, some even have balconies where you can smoke.
The hotel has a tram stop directly outside it and there is a supermarket directly below, which closes at about 6. Directly across the road there is a 24 hour shop that sells food, beer ect.
There is also a pizza shop 3 minute walk from the hotel!!!

the people at the Abba are total a#$holes. This is the worst kind of hotel, an experience of deception and threat which all sensible people should avoid.
these f@#king jerks have THE NERVE to sell you postcards advertising shops, then they install these smoke alarms in the little rooms and if they go off, they will throw you out. the reception staff are also a bunch of pricks. Mark this place off if you value your trip at all: these are a bunch of exploitative monsters who don't care a f#$k about you at all.
Back in 2001, I had a reservation with them. I arrived to find the hotel had burned down. How appropriate.

I would like to say one thing. Banning smoking in all hotels is a very bad thing because lots of us prefer to "smoke at home"--it is, or was, comfortable. Plus, these rooms are not cheap, and they're very small--you should be able to enjoy it.
Not all smokers are socialites--that doesn't seem to matter. You could be annoyed by the type of music, the way people talk, anything. Banning smoking is a not-so-nice way of saying, "you aren't welcome here." Plus, a lot of you have been advertising apartments and 5-star hotels--these are way out of the price range of most of us mere mortals. In other words, fork over the extra cash, or get lost. We don't want you around.
Look, the WHOLE POINT is that YOU HAVE COME HERE TO SMOKE. You have heard everything about the policy. You have reassured yourself that you aren't going to be arrested. You have paid a lot of money for the plane ticket. A lot of these hotel proprietors are coming off like thieves right now.
I love Amsterdam. But if this bollocks law is really going to be enforced--and I can't smoke even tobacco in my room--myself, and a lot of us, will have to give it up and, say, try to break the law in whatever country we are in...

hotels--and beyond
the first time i was in europe--1996. Hostel--25 guilders/night ($9)
Hotels--60 guilders--$25.
Now, same hotel--75 EUR ($137).
They've got a lot of nerve, doing this to us.

I have noticed that there are huge numbers of hotels rooms still available in Amsterdam over the peak holiday/tourist season.
It could be the double effect of a worldwide recession and the ban on smoking even in a hotel room. I find the actual prices of most of the hotels to be reasonable when compared to other cities around Europe.

Me and my friends stayed at The Heart of amsterdam. Its location was great, next door to the cannabis collage! Room was good, 1 bunk bed and 1 single bed. Room came with a 36" HD Tv!!! which we were impressed with (as we'd had brought an xbox 360) Also it had free wireless internet connection anywhere in the hotel (which was also good as we'd brought a laptop). It was a little pricey costing around 590 euros for 5 nights for 3 people. Came with a basic breakfast in the morning which started and ended quiet early.
Also my friends digital camera was stolen but were not sure whether it was the cleaners or because the window was left open.
All in all it was a good smoker friendly hotel.
