I am very very new at buying and I never know if i am being ripped off or not.

Where would you suggest i go, what should i ask for?

I am really looking for tips that will ensure that I do not look /sound like a complete novice and therefore lessen my chances of being given 2nd rate weed etc .

Appreciate any suggestions!

Hello , if your worried about being sold something which u didnt ask for you could always go to cs's which have it already bagged & labeled, katsu &central are 2 that spring 2mind, but like the others have said good cs's very rarely rip people off, its not in their interest, go to basjoes, tweede de kamer, dampkring, paradox, bluebird, HGF, you wont have any trouble at these places

From my experiences, none of the major C/S's rip off customers. I have been to plenty of smaller, non-mainstream shops and they have been reliable as well. Stick with the well know shops at first, then branch out. As mentioned, not in their best interest to rip people off.

Plenty of good advice has been given on where to go, and I have to agree with recommending Basjoes. James is the best (IMHO). As for what to ask for, depends on what you want. Look over the menu, talk with the tender, and sort things out.

The best tip/advice I could give is to relax and just be yourself. If you are worried about first time jidders, go to a shop that isn't busy so you can take your time and get a feel of things.

Hello and welcome Have a look at the CS reviews and pick a few to try, you will be fine at the popular recommended places. If you are polite with the bud-tenders and tell them you are new to this and the type of buzz you want, they are usually very helpful and point you in the right direction for a suitable smoke. Go to a shop though and don't be tempted to buy on the street. Have a great time.

Barneys and Greenhouse don't over charge for low quality product?

OP, check out the recent trip reports. We have a section on coffeeshops that the forum has voted to be best, everyone does not agree on them as some think smaller unique shops should of been placed higher ( i am one of these people ) but that's a good place to start.

Umm, you got me there.
Barneys does charge a premium price for average gear, no doubt.
Greenhouse, never been, no comment.

Never had something from GH that i was happy with, in terms of price and quality.

IMO the only chain shop i would say to a first timer to go to is Dampkring, i tend not to go there so much when im in town, i'd rather spend time in different places but its not a bad place.

As for chains, the Rokerij isn't bad. The one I wouldn't recommend is the Bulldog, unless the scene fits what is wanted.
When I'm in town, I check out my favorite shops and on occasion one or two that I haven't been to. With around 250 shops in Amsterdam, it could take a while to check them all out. '8)'
