Amsterdam clamps down on litter-lout smokers
29/03/2010
From now on dropping a cigarette end on the pavement in the Amsterdam district of Westerpark will cost you 90 euros.
A national anti-litter organisation has launched a pilot campaign along with the district council to ban cigarette ends from the streets. The organisation claims that unsightly cigarette ends account for 50 percent of the litter dropped in the Netherlands – just a fraction of the 3.5 trillion cigarette ends dropped around the world each year.
The pilot scheme will try out different approaches in different areas of the district, including an increase in the number of litterbins with built-in ashtrays. The scheme is launched today with the unveiling of a four-metre high ashtray-equipped litterbin in the local park. However, the cheerful information campaign is backed by a hefty 90-euro fine for unwary smokers who flick their cigarette ends on the pavement.

It takes nothing to put fag ends in a bin just as much as it takes nothing to clear up and return your glass to the bar when you leave a coffeeshop or pub rather than just walk out. That one always bugs me when I see tourists do it.
