Why is grey area so popular? It is tiny. Looks like an uncomfortable place to smoke. The kind of place they want you to buy and just leave in fact. The menu whilst extensive is very expensive and the location not really prime.

What am I missing here?

Not much, lol.
Other than the ocasional, banging, bit of herb, the only appeal the Gey Area has for me is the Super cool, friendly folks who work there. They never seem to be in a bad mood. And regardless of how busy the shop is, they always seem more than happy to show you all thier selections, and tell ya the origins of each one.
Totaly agree about price though, I couldn't afford to buy all my herb from places like this.

All the above is true indeed, (BTW I thought their Chocolope in Oct was the best herb I got that trip, but I read from others its a weak batch at the mo?) - they used to specialise in top quality BIO ganja years ago which I dont see anymore at all on their menus which is a shame because I used to go all that way primarily for the BIO buds. It is amazing how helpful they are given how repetitive it must be saying the same thing all day long..Its very US friendly, thats the main draw nowadays I suppose, if you are US citizen and want to deal with a fellow countryman, certainly other places have the same or better buds, but they appear to be sincere at least in their efforts, unlike some others we might mention (e.g the tourist trap Church)...

Have to say people although you cant smoke inside ive always found the bud and prices in centraal of top quality.And ive always been made to feel so welcome by the budtender who has always pointed me in the right direction of the in strains at the time. Got a lovely bag of jack hearer in the for 12.50 and it was 1.9g by far the best deal in town. As i said the only drawback is you cant sit inside and smoke. Also ive always liked Hunters and the rokerij 3. The budtender again in r3 has always been really nice and always allows a good smell of the product before u buy. Great lattes and hot choclate to wash down the perfect smoke.

Just spent the weekend in Dam, Grey Area was fantastic for buds but it is far too small, Prix D'Ami was fantastic, great place to relax and the best bit of bud I found was there, a little beauty called "Sleaze", the only other place that had it was Noon and what a horrible little place, I went there after hearing loads of rave reviews about there Blueberry Haze, that was not there but they had a Blueberry silver haze which was ok, the BB House special was not that great either, didn't get to Homegrown fantasy which I am disappointed about and also Barneys was quality as well, all was going well in there until my mate burnt there last Vaporizer bag (twat) lol.

Happy Feelings, which resides in the same location as the former Global Chillage in Kirkstraat in Leidesplein was quite friendly with brilliant decor of coloured lights, chrome-techie stools (which weren’t really comfy especially whilst being baked) and a friendly guy at the desk with a good menu selection.
To compensate for the tobacco ban, coffeeshops now offer alternatives like herbal smoking mixtures, pure weed joints and vaporizers. HF had plenty of vaporizers at each table. They glowed like lava lamps. Pretty nice. I didn’t use it because if I did they would have had to scrape me off the top of the Rijksmuseum.
All the same it was a pleasant experience, all the snacks, drinks and coffees are in vending machines, so it's DIY. A nice change from having to wait for service from the usual uber-bored euro-girl behind the bar with attitude.
Note: the pre-rolled pure joint is top notch.

I had a good chat with the British owners, including the bloke everyone criticizes as being mirthless cunt. He wasn’t. He even laughed at a few jokes.
Barneys is always the place to have weird chats with total strangers. I taught an American guy how to put hash in his joint, he told me his marriage sex problems and then staggered off on his way...also had a smoke with a young Scottish bloke I met on a pot-smokers internet forum who was indulging in some weed called Sweet Tooth. I can honestly say that he enjoyed that spliff enormously! I am presuming this as he was from Glasgow and I never understood a single word he said. Kinda like talking to the T-Mobile customer service guy.
I had Morning Glory. Absolutely delicious. It has a smokey, almost hickory flavor and it hits you after only 3-4 tokes. Nice!
Barneys has improved. No more grubby-dressed backpackers from Canada cluttering up the place waiting for dishes of food with no available space to sit; it’s now like a Starbucks with more room to shake and bake. The music was upbeat and the lovely UK girl behind the bar was very pleasant
Across the street is Barneys Uptown which was an oasis of relaxation, especially early in the morning. It’s laid out like a proper restaurant with a wide range of food including the popular cheese and potato omelette. And you can smoke a joint there, yours or theirs (you have to buy it at the coffeeshop across the street and come back)
The euro-girl waitress was really nice, friendly and the service was four star. A good place to get out of the bracing cold and rest your feet after walking in circles for an hour looking for a suitable place to blaze-up.

Abraxas
Probably the best of all the coffeeshops i visited. They had some seriously good weed, along with righteous ambient music, internet access and lots of snacks and drinks. Also there's a souvenir shop with lots of lovely items, t-shirts, hats, smoking gear you'll have to leave behind less you get searched by customs coming back. Or is it just me?

[i.e whenever i went to Barneys in the 90s all the tables would be packed solid with Canadians dressed like the MacKenzie Brothers with rucksacks. the clue was the little flag they always wear. In a similar fashion The Bulldog chain was always full of Brits]
