I was just wondering if you could pay for your coffeeshop purchases in the dam with british pounds. I already have 200 euros to spend in one day, but I am not sure if that will be enough. If you are allowed to pay with pound notes is there any kind of additional charge for doing so?
Thanks in advance for any responses.

Hi my friend, you sound like some of my fellow Americans.stoner wrote:I was just wondering if you could pay for your coffeeshop purchases in the dam with british pounds. You absolutely cannot pay with any other currency than the Euro, and I think many Dutch would be quite insulted if you try. You can use an UK ATM card to get cash, or you can change your pounds to euros.
Have fun in Amsterdam, and 200 is quite a lot for one day!
No worries mate.stoner wrote:Well, thank you for the speedy response. I definitely do not want to insult anyone while I am visiting Amsterdam. I also think 200 euros is alot for one day, but as I am only there for one day I would hate to not be able to do something because I don't have enough money.
Thanks again.

As Marco has said, pounds are simply not acceptable stoner!
Groats, shillings and dubloons are all good though!
Joking aside, if you take £Sterling with you and intend to convert to Euros, the best exchange rate I found was a small counter on Leidseplein, only about 0.5 cents off the actual exchange rate & of course no commission - I'll try to find out the name of the place for you.

10 B&H + a packet of rizla,not the greens
DR, that would be helpful as I am possibly going to have to exchange some pounds for euros, and also people who are with me may need to do the same.
Rather than starting a new thread right away, I was wondering if you may know about the post office situation on a Saturday. I have read that some are open with limited hours. The reason I am asking is that I wanted to buy lighters and other coffeeshop logo items, and I wish to mail them back. My reasoning for this is that I have read a post in a forum saying that when customs found a pack of king size papers in his luggage they (customs officers) made him submit to a cavity search.
Any light you can shine on this subject would be appreciated.

We really do not use official Post Offices anymore in NL. The retail side has been privatized and most mailing is done from Tabac's that also serve as mailing centers. Looking for this sign outside a Tabac and mail your 'grinders and t-shirts' homestoner wrote:DR, that would be helpful as I am possibly going to have to exchange some pounds for euros, and also people who are with me may need to do the same.

Marco, so am I right in assuming that these retail postal outlets will be able to accept and mail a package at 6:00 PM/1800 ? Also, what exactly is a Tabac? I just want to thank you both again as I would be pretty lost without your help.Marco wrote:We really do not use official Post Offices anymore in NL. Tabac is a shop selling cigarettes, newspapers, cards, etc. Not all have the Post part though.stoner wrote:Marco, so am I right in assuming that these retail postal outlets will be able to accept and mail a package at 6:00 PM/1800 ?
