I was one of those whose flight was cancelled due to the volcano cloud.
Not wanting to take the risk that I might miss this weeks activities I immediately booked a ferry from Hull to
Rotterdam. The Amsterdam ferry had already been booked up so was glad to get what I got even though I paid through
the nose. This is one of the problems with being a solo traveller. If I'd been travelling with someone the price
would have been similar for the 2 bunk cabin and at 1/2 price the trips cost might not have spiralled so much. Oh
well. I'm not going to worry about that. One life to lead and all that.
Got to Hull in plenty of time and had to queue for 1 hour 15 mins to check in. By then it was time to board and
breezed onto the ship and into my cabin ready to freshen up for dinner. I had got dinner and breakfast with my
ticket. Had no choice as a matter of fact. The ferry trip passed very quickly and had a nice sleep despite the
drunken stupid british stag parties going arouind slapping everyones cabin door at closing time. Was up about 4am
and the ship was closed. It was amazing. No one up except one other night owl who was off to Amsterdam too.
In a Ghost ship situation the only thing left to do is have a good old walk around which I did.
In the morning I was the last person to eat breakfast on the ship. Literally getting there 1 minute before they
took the food away. I had the restaurant to myself and after finishing I had time to shower/shave and pack before
disembarking and getting the coach to Rotterdam centraal station. By the way for those of you who might need to
post something home there is a TNT post office right by where the coach drops off.
I like travelling by train and wanted some flexibility in my travel plans which might include having a look around
Rotterdam at some point. Got to say I have not been imporessed so far. Rotterdam it seems was levelled during WW2
and it looks like they have not finished rebuilding yet. There is annoying contruction in many places including
Centraal station which I can happily say is the most characterless and jerry built looking station I've ever seen
in a major city. There is no question that Rotterdam is a major city that means business. The people have a hard
and practical look about Have been finding it hard to find anything worth taking a picture of there yet. them here.
Rather like the look of the endless modern housing estates which look like a 60's nightmare turned into a dream.
Amazing how much better places look in the sunshine.
Just managed to catch the 10:41 train to Ams centraal and in bright sunshine we are going through the outskirts of
Rotterdam now
Now I'm on the train surrounded by a bunch of guys wearing diagonal red and white striped ties. They are dutch and
seem quite well heeled despite their somewhat casual attire. I'm hoping they are not some kind of Dutch equivilant
of a football inter city crew. Most likely they are a dutch stag party going into the big city for a weekend of
fun!
My plan is to document where possible this trip. In the past most of my plans have been Amsterdammed so we will see
how it goes.
As far as practical stuff goes I need to get to my hotel, print out an ACD map. Check in then rent a bike.
There does not appear to be a wifi hotspot on the train that does not require a password so might want to check the
internet from my room before venturing out to find and buy the finest weed that the city has to offer to the
gullible tourist!
Most likely first on the list is Basjoe LA Confidential. Also Hunters NYCD could be in for a shout as well as
Bluberry cheese from Green place of course as well as most of their menu probably!
Mexi ice from bluebird could get a shout as well as Leffe blond from NES later on during the late footy match!
Also a smart shop will be on the list. Might try to find one near Katsu if I get that far in the time I have before
the early kick off fotty. Just have to watch to Manchester Derby - especially since I have City to win. Think this
could be their time if they don't bottle it. Top 4 and bragging rights by 3pm sat I'm thinking. Probably will watch 1st half Green place then 2nd half at stones cafe or nes if open
